It is a dumb choice of a name, and there is no real choice between "caring for our people" and "worrying about names like the Washington Redskins".

One can do both or either at the same time.

This is an illogical false dichotomy.

I don't personally care about pro football in any aspect. It is something that bores me, and I ignore it.

Why aren't Minnesotans and Swedes offended when the Vikings are having a bad season?

The Vikings chose their own name.
The term "Redskin" was coined by the White Men.

If you about it blacks are racist against each other because they would use that word while punching a face. It does roll off the tongue.

Black people and White people alike have used the "n word" since the times the first slaves arrived.

It has become a taboo word. Blacks allow other Blacks to use it and use it themselves, but they do not want Whites to use it.

Once, I was fiddling around at my college after registration, getting all the stuff together foer the next day, since I was in charge of Humanities Registration that day.

Coach Parker the basketball coach and Coach Smith were talking about the team for the coming year. And Coach Parker said "We'd have a great team if we could get them  n****rs to practice as much as they should. They always missing practice or cutting off before we're through.  But you know, them n****rs LAZY! Then Coach Parker said, "Sorry Dr (Onassis) we didn't mean for you to hear that."

I think I said "that's okay".

Such is the nature of verbal taboos.

this is a new one cultural appropriation which is anything unique to ones culture is cannot be used by anyone else. I`m goona sound crazy but isn`t this the total opposite of diversity?

that would mean nobody but italians is allowed to eat italian food.

Taboos are common in every culture. They are irrational, but I don't think they are hypocritical. There is a taboo against asking a person one does not know about how much they earn, pointing at people, calling adults by their first name, asking about one's sex life, discussing menstruation in mixed company, and a  variety of taboos about death and dying.

I agree, people don't need to be restricted to a few costumes.

If a Chinese guy wants to wear a kilt, that is fine with me.

If he wants to wear our tartan,...well that is still ok as long as we don't have a feud going on.

Of course they're hypocritical.  No one is condemned or vilified for asking how much someone else makes.  Asking about sex or menstruation isn't taboo, its simply very poor taste, if not overtly rude.  Claiming its ok for person x to say the n word, but condemning person y for saying it is the very definition of hypocrisy.

Team names are supposed to be good for the team.

This should be the first criterion.

If the fans don't like the name , this is a fail.

If the name causes the team more heartache than benefit for any reason , then it fails.

Is "Redskins" a made up problem?
How does it really affect the team?

There are no Indians on the Redskins team, Probably a few of the players have an Indian chromosome or two, but there are no ethnic Indians. Poor sirs would like t0o use the n word but he is barred from using it publicly by a  social taboo . Gotta feel sorry for sirs.
