The percentage of Muslims in France is much higher than in the US.
Historically, France had colonies in Morocco, Tunisia and a lot of African countries that are mostly Muslim.
Until the 1960's, Algeria was officially a part of France. France only left after a bloody war.
Muslims in the US are mostly not from the Maghreb (ie North Africa), where there is a lot more radicalization. Black Muslims do not identify with Sunnis and Shias overseas. Most of our Muslims from overseas have come here as refugees from oppression. Most of those in France came for economic reasons. Refugees are much more likely to adapt to the new country than economic refugees who come and go to North Africa regularly. A lot of our Muslim refugees are Iranians who came because they were partisans of the Shah, largely educated middle class people who came to escape the Ayatollah and the Revolutionary Guard.
Those who have engages in violent antisocial behavior have been Pakistanis, Arabs, Afghanis, Yemenis and from Muslim parts of Russia and the former USSR.
