I was reading about the recent closures of stores and that technology is directly the cause of this. The convience of just ordering it online instead of going to the store and buying has caused some serious damage. This will have a serious negative affect on the economy.

absolutely it will

i think most Americans really don't have a good grip on what is about to happen

i am thrilled I am at an age that I will slide into retirement before the shit really hits the fan.

but it is going to hit like nothing we've ever seen as far a radical change

I'll use coal mining as an example today thier are alot less miners than you think but capable with technology mining a massive amount of coal. Which explains why places which coal is the main economy but tend to be poor since little money is actually going the community.

Automation does open up to new jobs but the nature of it would be alot less of them and likely require skill not learned on the job.

Kimba as a business owner I can certainly see why some companies are heading this way.

It is incredible how much of my day is spent on "baby-sitting" employees type stuff.

An employee asked me a few weeks ago, why are we hiring 3 new people?

I said because:
"little johnny has a sore throat"
"my alarm clock didn't go off, I'm going to be late"
"my car won't start"
"my great-uncle died"
"my in-laws showed up unexpectedly and I need off"
"my wife's step-father's sister died"
"i've gotta be in court over a traffic ticket"
"i need to leave at noon because little Mary has a soccer tournament this weekend"
"i need to schedule my two week vacation"
"I will be out today because I have a migraine"
"i have a doctors appointment"
"i have a dental appointment"
"I cant stand working with the sales manager, he is a real prick"
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, blah

so you see why it is tempting for some of these companies to consider robots?

i totally understand the desire for any business to never hire humans a use machines do all the work but the downside can be proven by referencing henry ford. to paraphrase him "whose gonna buy my cars?"

the computer industry is experiencing that right now

Kimba I agree with you 100%
just explaining the nightmare baby-sitting
however we are very "old school"
every incoming call is answered by a live "fluent in English" speaking American
none of the "Press 1 For English" crap
that will NEVER happen as long as I am in charge....NEVER
none of the "Press 2 For Customer Service" crap
we are so averse to that BS we purposely don't even have voicemail on our phone system
we have online services too....but we still answer every phone within seconds
a customer has a problem? they can speak with a live human in seconds without any prompts

Now that you mention it seems thats happenning less now. It was never an attractive part of dealling with any service. Possibly lose more money than save.
