Fire it up

Plug it in, fire it up, Mr. President

The Detroit News

Credit Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally with saving the leader of the free world from self-immolation.

Mulally told journalists at the New York auto show that he intervened to prevent President Bush from plugging an electrical cord into the hydrogen tank of Ford's hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid at the White House last week. Ford wanted to give the Commander-in-Chief an actual demonstration of the innovative vehicle, so the automaker arranged for an electrical outlet to be installed on the South Lawn and ran a charging cord to the hybrid. However, as Mulally followed Bush out to the car, he noticed someone had left the cord lying at the rear of the vehicle, near the fuel tank.

"I just thought, 'Oh my goodness!' So, I started walking faster, and the President walked faster and he got to the cord before I did. I violated all the protocols. I touched the President. I grabbed his arm and I moved him up to the front," Mulally said. "I wanted the president to make sure he plugged into the electricity, not into the hydrogen. This is all off the record, right?"

Good to see him showcasing alternative energy vehicles.

That poor CEO...it's a wonder he wasn't tackled by Secret Service agents.

The CEO is a member of the rich boy club and exempt from Secret Service tackles

My husband tells a funny story that I can't remember all of now.   He worked in the  public information office when he was stationed at the air force base in Albuquerque.  He forgot something, he went to get it (I think), and wham, he was surrounded by men with guns because Kennedy or Johnson was on base.

So, Bush didn't actually try to plug the cord into the fuel tank?

If it were at all possible, which I doubt, they better change the design before they try to sell it to typical American homeowners. Unless, of course, they are going to supply a CEO to every household to prevent problems.

After all, American homeowners do some really stupid stuff. When I was working at Homelite, we had one guy sue us. Apparently, he first disabled the bail wire (which prevents a lawnmower from operating unless the operators hands are on the handle), picked up his Homelite lawnmower - by wrapping his hands around the edges, fingers underneath where the blades are - and tryed to use it as a hedgetrimmer. Needless to say, he cut off his own fingers, but claimed it was our fault, since the owners manual does not say the lawnmower should not be used for trimming hedges. We added a line in the owners manual that lawnmowers are for cutting grass, not trimming hedges after that.

My daughter did something similar at Andrews once. I was taking some pictures, and she started to wander into an area that was marked "Use of Deadly Force Authorized" (there was a U-2 beyond the signs - that's what I was photographing). I grabbed her jacket and pulled her back over the line just as a couple of Marines with M-16s started jogging towards us.

One of the doctors I really enjoyed working with at the ER had worked for years  in Saudi Arabia. He was teaching his teenage daughter how to drive; where better than a nice empty desert? He saw a security vehicle in the distance. They quickly changed places and the Saudi security people didn't catch on.  Gulp.  I don't think they did that again.

I do not understand this story.

Isn't the end of the chargeing cord female?

It should mate only to a matching male plug.

How could it possibly be pluged into a hydrogen fitting?

I have been a welder and an electrician and I have read up on these subjects and this story makes no sense to me at all.

The story is not about the car or the plug. It is simply a story implying that Bush is a reckless dumbass.

I considered whether this story was a joke, a spoof.  I couldn't find that it was, but that doesn't mean much.
What did the CEO mean: that if you touched the plug to the wrong place, you could cause an explosion? I have trouble believing that it would actually plug right in in the wrong place.
Or is this a bug they figured out in a very public way?
