My position is that rights to firearms, which can kill -- indeed, that is their purpose -- stand uniquely among our rights, that is, sui generis.

While my position would be in parallel with the founders of this country, when they put toegether the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, Rights that are not to be infringed, regardless of how some would see firearms as dangerous & "can kill".  That goes without saying.  They're designed to be dangerous, they are designed to kill.  That's why they've saved so many lives, when used properly.  They are necessary for defense, so much so, our founders knew how important it was to have an armed populace, NOT to be heavily regulated by any means, by a Government agency. That would be polar opposite to the purpose of the 2nd amendment

All of my handguns must be defective, then. Not a single one has killed anyone, and I've shot them a lot.

With arguments like this, we'll really advance an intellectually honest, socially useful understanding of the matter.

more like a test
similiar to a drivers permit
you need certain knowledge to own a gun
I had to take a test for my exposed gun permit for my job.
it was mostly on what`s legal to do with a gun.
would this be a bad idea?

Yeah, arguments like "their only use is to kill" are a real stumbling block to a meaningful discussion.

So, you're basing your argument for reduced gun control on your oh, so precious hobby?

No. I think all infringments on our rights, going back nearly a hundred years, should be removed. That includes 2nd Amendment infringements.

BLOGOMETER: "If you were expecting for the netroots to join more traditional Dem calls for increased gun control following the tragedy in Blacksburg, VA, don't hold your breath. At deadline, none of the top five netroots sites (Daily Kos, Eschaton, TPM, AMERICAblog, and MyDD) have called for any changes to gun laws (CLARIFICATION: AMERICAblog does ask for a 'revisit' of guntrol but nothing specific). And don't expect them to either. The VA Tech shootings are serving as an albeit tragic marker in demonstrating just how different Dems are in '07 than they were in '99. With bloggers in the lead, Dems have gotten past the gun-control issue and helped reclaim majorities with help from netroots backed pro-gun candidates Sens. Jim Webb (D-VA), John Tester (D-MT), and Reps. Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) and Heath Shuler (D-NC).

BT, don't forget that we're also living in the 6th year of the Rule of Bush.  Which should make anyone fully realize how very necessary the 2nd Amendment is, in case we have to put down a repressive regime.  That might have a tiny bit to do with it.

A comparative study of deaths and serious injury from lawful weapons (crimes or accidents) with deaths or serious injuries prevented by lawful possession of weapons (deterrence) is not available to my knowledge.

Really ?

This makes me tink that we are all blowing hot air and guessing.

I would guess that a little less than half of the gunshot deaths in the US are from Police shooting  , if we do not allow the police to carry fiearms we could save at least that many lives.

I don't believe people who think that way about the Bush Administration would pass the mental requirements to own a gun.

If this is the case, then next year is The Year of the Jubilee. This means all debt is forgiven, etc. It means all will be well. So, THAT for you Dems!
