The gunman who carried out the worst mass shooting in American history reportedly re-enacted scenes from a violent South Korean film before killing 32 students and teachers at a Virginia Tech university.

Police think Cho Heung-sui watched the violent film Oldboy  as part of his chilling preparations for the killing spree.

In a package of videos and stills, Cho can be seen wielding various weapons in poses that bear a strong resemblance to scenes in Oldboy, as well scenes in the works of John Woo, the Hong Kong director responsible for violent films such as Face/Off.

The similarities were spotted by Professor Paul Harris of Virginia Tech, who then alerted the authorities, according to the Evening Standard.

The videos and stills, only some of which have been released by NBC, are estimated to have taken a number of days to produce.

They show the careful planning that went into the bloody attacks by a student whose behaviour had long been a cause of serious concern to both students and teachers at the university.
