Of course, that is the states themselves. Individuals are a different thing, entirely.

I do believe that is what the article warns about. Not secession but an armed struggle for an ideology.

Picture the warring camps as urban areas against the suburbs, exurbs and rural areas.

Ahh, that is why Southern cities are fabulous. All the progress, along with all the weapons!  :P

There won't be a Civil War in the United States because that would involve getting people up off of their asses and actually caring enough about something to take some sort of action.

While I do agree that Americans are wholly apathetic and numb, I am less inclined to think that some that "care" about their views won't become violent. The only concern at that point is that while the right still has its point of rally-the church-the left has no collective group to support themselves(gay activists excepted).

Environmentalists. Feminists. Pro-choice groups. Anti-war groups.

Ami, those are segmented, and to that end, divisive within the party. Certainly not as all-encompassing as the church is to the right.

Of course, who knows? Maybe I'll open a Church of Transcendentalism  ;D

The "church" is not as "all-encompassing" as you seem to think.

Would they mind if I brought some mead and performed a blót?

They might , what is a blo't and does mead stain carpet?

If you chose the right church you might get a lot of attention because some like a challenge.

Choose the wrong church and you might get handed a rattlesnake , which could cause you to perform a plotz .
