Lanya, it seems to me that there is a rapidly-shrinking band of good, decent, old-fashioned Americans who believe in the rule of law, respect human rights and human dignity and behave with class and humanity even to their enemies.  Norman Rockwell Americans or whatever you want to call them.  The kind of people who helped win WWII.  But let's be realistic - - they are no longer America.  There is another America and it really isn't Norman Rockwell's any more.

"That they and their ilk will carry on their heads the disappointed rage of their fellow citizens who finally realize that they've been had, that it was all a giant con, that they've squandered their treasure, their sons' lives and limbs for a cheap pack of lies purveyed by a smirking con man.  It is really delicious."

    Your such an optomist.
You can see things going your way even in such a bloody mess.

Isn't it still possible that the big push that the insurrection asd Al Quieda are mounting will not result in a Democratic victory in November and will exaust the terrorists for pitifully small gains?

More to the point , why is a Democratic victory in the Congress such a value to Al Queda and the Iriqui insurrection that they are willing to sacrifice hundreds of themselves and thousands of bystanders to the purpose?

That's quite an assumption.

Think Tet Offensive.  They don't give a shit who wins the election, they hope to show that support for the war is unhealthy for any candidate of either party.  In races where one candidate is vociferously pro-war and one is either anti-war or just "not pro-war," they hope to see the pro-war guys wipe-out badly.  They want to create an anti-war climate that will be hospitable to anti-war candidates in 08.  When NO candidate will run on a stay-the-course platform.
