China uncovers "worms, substandard goods" from U.S.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has found microscopic worms in wooden packaging from the United States and uncovered substandard U.S. vitamin pills and fish oil for children, Chinese media said on Friday in the latest volley of cross-border accusations.

China has highlighted several quality concerns with U.S. products in apparent response to recent complaints in Washington about the safety of Chinese exports ranging from toys to toothpaste.

The pine wood worms, or nematodes, were found in 13 sets of packaging in the manufacturing hub of Shenzhen, the China Daily said.

Harmful organisms were found in another 10 of 70 batches of wooden packaging sampled between mid-July and mid-August.

This meant the rate of sub-standard packaging from the United States was higher than that for the European Union, Japan, Korea or Canada, the newspaper said.

The labels on some of the wooden packaging were unclear, the report said, adding that that this suggested some exporters might have used fake documents.

Officials have destroyed the goods and urged tighter supervision of wooden U.S. packaging, the paper said.

The vitamin and mineral pills and children's fish oil were discovered in the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang, the China News Service said.

"The two failed to reach the nutritious levels promised on their labels," it said, citing the Zhejiang industrial and commercial department.

China recently destroyed a cargo of sub-standard frozen potato slices also shipped from the United States, and the quarantine bureau earlier this month highlighted a cargo of contaminated soybeans that arrived in February.

China has sent a notice to the World Health Organization defending its own food safety standards and said it was willing to cooperate globally to tackle the problem.

China's quality watchdog on Friday introduced what Xinhua news agency called a landmark recall system for unsafe food products and toys to improve product safety.

The regulations, following the introduction of recall system for defective cars in 2005, went into effect on Friday, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine announced.

Xinhua did not give details.

Fuck 'em! Shut 'em down! Don't let 'em send anything over here. They retaliate, fine. Let's play chicken, shall we?

We need to quit relying on others. Come on America, where's that self-reliance? Sheeeeeet.

china is way more capable of self-relience than the U.S.
that bit of plastic in your wallet has made america kinda on stupid side
china`s culture believe in saving and spent very little
america`s culture believes in spending non-existent money and get bailed out
it`s just business
it doesn`t have to work
it`s just has put money in somebodies pocket

Um, China is a communist society. What are they saving, toilet paper?

Their political system is still communist, but their economy is becoming more and more capitalistic.

toilet paper is probly one of the few things they will spend on.
except for the big cities
most don`t spend money
it`s actually quite a problem in china
it`s seriously impacting the economy over there
but it`ll take 50 years for some real damage to result
america`s spending is hurting folks now
until banks stop giving credits card to people with negative credit
I shred at least a dozen of those mailed in bankchecks a month.
this is why ID theft is serious stuff
it so simply to live off peoples credit(good or bad)

True, but the vast majority of Chinese aren't taking part in it.

So it's the banks fault that people spend money they don't have? To my way of thinking it's your fault, not the banks.

>>I shred at least a dozen of those mailed in bankchecks a month.<<

Which is what people should do if they can't afford to abide by the credit lenders rules.

yes it`s these peoples fault for spending money they don`t have.
but how smart are banks for pushing people to spending money they can`t payback
ideally it`s hook them so they`ll perpetually pay beyound the original amount several times over
but people are spending beyound that point.
I`ve stated many times ,we lost the ability to not spend
many times I`ve said to people I got no money and the response is used your creditcard.
blaming peoples irresponsibilty is not gonna do anything.
the growing trend in ID theft is probly a byproduct of easy spending.
in fact you don`t even need to sign nowadays.(walgreens)

Does the Chinese Government really think that there is an effort to defame them going on?

Or do they think privately that there is a problem with quality controll and are saying otherwise publicly to aleave the loss of face that these recalls have been causing.

both

the chinese government is like a family
their are a few black sheeps in it but you`ll not admit they exist and other members believe everybody is innocent.
corruption is a very inaccurate word .
more like good business practice with no regard for the customers.
not too different from what america was like 50 years ago
buyer beware was a very popular phrase then

Could an Upton Sinclair or a Ralph Nader work as a muckraker in China?

We have never had quite enough muckrakers even though it can pay well.
Even in the USA it is an arduous job , in China is it even possible to do?

Hmmmmmmmmm...

I think you are right , is there anyone who can be credable and effective ?

I will be amazed to see a real muckraker operateing in China  , but it would increase my respect for the Chineese Government immensely even as the muckraker drug the durt out from under the carpet.

Of course why should they care what I think?
