So, is there anything we can do to mitigate this environmental disaster?
Actually there is but it is doubtful that we will take advantage of it.
It is called being responsible and we are greatly responsible for the demise of the rain forests.
We use fossil fuels in large hungry bites and send pollution up into the atmosphere...we eradicate mile up mile of natural flora and fauna driving the native animal life into smaller (and not always compatible) areas.
Now don't get me wrong... I am not suggesting that we stop driving our cars and all move into barracks... but if we save energy were we can and stop with the urban sprawl... we could make a difference. Certainly we would slow down the impact.
I am certainly a mixed metaphor when it comes to consumption. I bought a used home in an established neighborhood, I keep my air conditioner set at 83 degrees and I never turn on my heat...though I do use my heat pump for the pool for february and march. I drive an SUV but only work 3 miles from home. If I could afford another car, I would get a hybrid for my everyday driving and save the SUV for when my home turns into Vacation florida...
So I guess what I am saying is that we all need to make a few concessions were we can.... to look for other methods of fuel (not to replace but to share in the market) and to stop just gobbling up habitat. Oh... and plant more trees... I have planted 30 trees since I purchased my home in 2004. They are great air filters and shade the ground so that ground cover doesn't get burned up from the hot sun.
Let's not forget the "dust bowl".... that was a far reaching environmental nightmare... but we got past it and fixed it.
