The anti-war lobby MoveOn.org published a full page ad in the New York Times accusing Army General David H. Petraeus of betrayal the day he was scheduled to testify to Congress about progress in Iraq.
?He is just trying to cook the books for the White House,? the ad said. ?Today, before Congress and before the American people, General Petraeus is likely to become General Betray Us.?
The spot characterizes Petraeus as a ?military man constantly at war with the facts? who ?will not admit what everyone knows: Iraq is mired in an unwinnable religious civil war.?
Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker are scheduled to testify in a joint hearing before the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committee Monday afternoon.
House Republican Whip Rep. Roy Blunt (Mo.) immediately issued a statement that called on Democratic leadership to condemn the ad. ?Enough is enough ? Moveon.org has gone too far with an ad that attacks one of our nation?s finest generals,? Blunt said. ?Democratic leaders must denounce these ads and make clear that they do not sanction what is an assault on the integrity and veracity of our nation?s top commander in Iraq.?
These people really are the scum of the Earth.
