Huckabee challenges Romney over fried chicken
Posted: 09:01 AM ET

PENSACOLA, Florida (CNN) ? Mitt Romney's failure to eat fried chicken with the skin on is nothing short of blasphemy here in the South, according to GOP rival Mike Huckabee.

Romney, of Massachusetts, dug into a piece fried chicken at KFC while campaigning in Lutz, Florida on Saturday, but not before peeling off what most would consider the best part ? the crispy skin.

Admittedly, KFC's chicken doesn't exactly stack up against the delectable kind that comes out of deep fryers in kitchens around the South, and Romney said he was looking for the healthiest option available to him for lunch.

Huckabee, looking ahead to a flotilla of southern states up for grabs on Super Tuesday, was told about the move by a reporter here in the Florida panhandle.

"I can tell you this," he said, "any Southerner knows if you don?t eat the skin don?t bother calling it fried chicken."

"So that's good. I'm glad that he did that, because that means I'm going to win Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma ? all these great Southern states that understand the best part of fried chicken is the skin, if you're going to eat it that way."

Huckabee admitted that he hasn't eaten fried chicken in a while because of his weight loss program, preferring it broiled or baked instead.

And speaking of possible gaffes, a good Southerner might also dispute one of Huckabee's claims: since when is Oklahoma "a great southern state"?

While it is true that the skin is the most tasty part of Col. Sanders recipe, it also has most of the cholesterol. I am sure Huckabee knows this, and so does Romney.

This has to be the dumbest topic so far.

I'm afraid you'll find in the South it's what passes for real "innalekshual" debate.  ;)

I think they should just abolish the voting completely and replace it with a winner-take-all fried chicken-eatin' contest at Hooters.

I think hooters is more known for buffalo wings not fried chicken.
I never been to one, despite every single friend thinks I`m a regular.

I chose Hooters more for its bubba-type ambience than its cuisine.  I don't have a clue what they serve in there and I don't wanna know.  Hooters doesn't appeal much to Canadian men - - for anyone interested in the female form, we have nude lap-dance clubs with full body contact.  Hooters is pretty much high-school sanitized sex, look but don't touch and whatever you're looking at is all covered up anyway.  We don't have fundamentalist Christians running our governments and telling us how to live our lives.

Hooters is a sports bar. Guys go in there more to watch sports on the various big screens, than to ogle women. The "cuisine" is a mix of appetizers, burgers, and cheap beer - the sort of stuff that would be served for the typical Sunday afternoon game at home. We have nude lap dancing places in the US as well, if that's what you're into.

I'm more into "Fat Boys" anyway. There is usually racing on the big screens and the women (both waitresses and customers) wearing riding leathers are more my taste. ;-)

At one time there were three Hooters resturaunts in Cleveland. They are all gone.

When we moved back there was one left, and it closed shortly after we arrived. I'm told people looked at them as a glorified titty bar, and people shunned them. Jacksonville Florida on the other hand has five Hooters restaurants scattered around town. When we moved to JAX in 1991 we'd take our one year-old son with us to Hooters because prices were reasonable and children eat free. It was always packed, and the patrons consisted of both women and men.

I guess the folks down South are more enlightened when it comes to buffalo wings, and breasts ... women's breasts.
