I agree Kennedy's Cuban Embargo has not freed the Cuban people from the mess they are in.
In hindsight a Nixon China opening would have worked better.

I think "Rocky IV" is the best way to free people from their bonds/chains.

the time has come to flood them with capitalism.
The Cuban people deserve to escape the failed system they have endured.

Most people have lived for two or three generations in a house that once belonged to richer Cubans who came to the US.

Telephone service is about 1/10 what they charge here, or free.

Education and medical care are free to all.

When Cuba had something like capitalism, it also had racism. No one wants that to return

"Flooding Cuba with Capitalism" would end all that. It would go over like a lead balloon.

Remember, the Cubans who LIKE capitalism (and racism) are mostly all here in the US.

Simply ending the embargo and letting things take their course without US meddling would be the best for Cuba as well as the US.

Well, you were right. Via the Miami Herald (hat tip - reader Craig) comes Chavez?s admission that he chews coca?you know, that same stuff that gets refined into cocaine:

Venezuela?s controversial President Hugo Ch?vez has revealed that he regularly consumes coca ? the source of cocaine ? raising questions about the legality of his actions.

Ch?vez?s comments on coca initially went almost unnoticed, coming amid a four-hour speech to the National Assembly during which he made international headlines by calling on other countries to stop branding two leftist Colombian guerrilla groups as terrorists and instead recognize them as ?armies.?

?I chew coca every day in the morning . . . and look how I am,? he is seen saying on a video of the speech, as he shows his biceps to the audience.

Ch?vez, who does not drink alcohol, added that just as Fidel Castro ??sends me Coppelia ice cream and a lot of other things that regularly reach me from Havana,? Bolivian President Evo Morales ?sends me coca paste . . . I recommend it to you.?

It was not clear what Ch?vez meant. Indigenous Bolivians and Peruvians can legally chew coca leaves as a mild stimulant and to kill hunger. But coca paste is a semi-refined product ? between leaves and cocaine ? considered highly addictive and often smoked as basuco or pitillo.

?It is another symptom that [Ch?vez] has totally lost the concept of limits,? said An?bal Romero, a political scientist with the Caracas Metropolitan University. ?It shows Ch?vez is a man out of control.?

Chewing coca and snorting it have vastly different effects.

Pretty much the entire population of the Andean altiplano in Peru and Bolivia chews coca leaves. It is the traditional way of adapting the body to living at 9000+ feet above sea level.

The traditional and quite effective remedy for soroche, altitude sickness, is a tea made from coca leaves.
