60 killed, 200 wounded in multiple bombings in India
By Bill Roggio
May 13, 2008 1:44 PM

A of explosions have torn through the tourist city of Jaipur late Tuesday night, killing more than 60 and wounding more than 200, according to the latest reports from India. Eight blasts occurred within 12 minutes of each other in crowded markets and near a temple, The Times of India reported. One bomb, which was placed near a Hindu temple, was defused by an Indian bomb disposal unit.

The near simultaneous strikes, described as "carefully orchestrated low-intensity explosions" bear the hallmarks of an al Qaeda operation. Sources within the Indian Home Ministry pointed the finger at the Bangladesh-based Harkat ul Jihad al Islami, an al Qaeda affiliate. Pipe bombs were used in the attack, and some officials believe the Pakistani-based Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group assisted in the attacks.

The Bangladeshi branch of Harkat ul Jihad al Islami Bangladesh, or HuJI-B, was established in 1992 "with assistance from Osama bin Laden?s International Islamic Front," according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal.

"HuJI aims to establish Islamic Hukumat (rule) in Bangladesh by waging war and killing progressive intellectuals," the South Asia Terrorism Portal stated. "It draws inspiration from bin Laden and the erstwhile Taliban regime of Afghanistan. At one point of time, the groups issued a slogan, Amra Sobai Hobo Taliban, Bangla Hobe Afghanistan (We will all become Taliban and we will turn Bangladesh into Afghanistan)."

HuJI-B fighters are recruited from madrassa, or religious schools, in Bangladesh and are trained in al Qaeda and Taliban camps Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Bangladeshi terror group plays a crucial role in training jihadists ?from southern Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Brunei? and providing manpower for al Qaeda's affiliates in Jammu and Kashmir, Afghanistan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chechnya.

Wow, you're using sixty deaths to build a strawman. That's stooping to an all-time low for this forum, I think.
I smell something burning, hope it's just my brains.
They're only dropping peppermints and daisy-chains
So stuff my nose with garlic
   Coat my eyes with butter
   Fill my ears with silver
   Stick my legs in plaster
   Tell me lies about Vietnam.

UN says up to 40 percent of those killed in Myanmar cyclone likely children
The Associated PressPublished: May 13, 2008

BANGKOK, Myanmar: About a third of those killed in the Myanmar cyclone may have been children and chaotic camps set up by survivors could put others at risk of human trafficking and sexual abuse, the U.N. and other agencies said Tuesday.

The crowded, makeshift shelters were forcing orphans and separated children to live alongside strangers, often in dark or unlit areas with little supervision, creating a perfect recruiting ground for predators.

"We are really concerned about the risk of exploitation and sexual abuse," said Anne-Claire Dufay, chief of UNICEF's child protection section in Myanmar, adding such worries are common in post-emergency situations. "If they don't have private sleeping spaces, it could be an issue."

Dufay said they have had one report of the attempted trafficking of a teenage storm survivor in the country's largest city, Yangon, but so far no confirmed reports of sexual abuse.

Similar concerns were expressed in the days following the 2004 tsunami, but little evidence of it emerged.

Cyclone Nargis devastated Myanmar's Irrawaddy delta on May 3, leaving about 62,000 people dead or missing according to the government count. The United Nations has suggested the death toll is likely to be more than 100,000.

UNICEF estimates a third of those killed were children, based largely on population data from the affected areas as well as the scant information on those who survived.

Reports coming from the swamped Irrawaddy delta have found village upon village decimated by the waves. Scores of families were killed and chilling photos have emerged showing the bodies of dead children.

"Our figures in the camps show a lot of adults, but very few children and very few elderly," said CARE Australia's country director in Myanmar, Brian Agland.

"The worst-case scenario is that a lot of children may have lost their lives because of drowning," he said. "In one village there were 500 survivors and they were all adults. So that's the kind of despair people are living with, wondering where their children are."

The other concern is the trauma faced by youngsters, some of whom have lost entire families or barely escaped the waves that destroyed their villages. Schools, too, were heavily damaged in many of the hardest hit areas, with 95 percent to 100 percent of educational buildings washed away in the cyclone.

Andrew Kirkwood, country director of Save the Children in Yangon, estimated that 3,000 schools were destroyed, which means a half-million young children have no prospect of beginning school when it opens June 1. "It's a huge concern," he said.

The United Nations and several NGOs including World Vision and Save the Children have begun setting up scores of youth centers, where they can talk about their concerns in a safe environment along with playing games, singing and learning basics like their numbers and alphabet.

"It helps these children go through the process of grief and shock more quickly," said Laura Blank, a spokeswoman for World Vision, which is setting up 37 centers in and around Yangon, serving up to 3,700 youngsters. "When the children have a chance ... to play and sing, you create an environment where they feel like it is OK for them to be kids again."

Many of the children endure a range of emotions following a tragedy like the cyclone, ranging from depression, to anger to sadness, child protection experts said. They also are facing health problems in Myanmar, including malnutrition, diarrhea and possibly malaria.

In Yangon, a woman and her 8-year-old grandson who claimed they lost their home in the disaster were begging on the streets. "We are here to help mother make some money so we can eat," the child, Tin Soe, said softly. "We are hungry."

Asked if he thinks his school will be rebuilt before the school year begins, he scratched his head and said: "I don't know. I hope so. I miss my friends and my teachers."

Soldiers hike to quake-buried Chinese villages By AUDRA ANG, Associated Press Writer
20 minutes ago

MIANYANG, China - Soldiers hiking over landslide-blocked roads reached the epicenter of China's devastating earthquake Tuesday, pulling bodies and a few survivors from collapsed buildings. The death toll of more than 12,000 was certain to rise as the buried were found.

Rescuers worked through a steady rain searching wrecked towns across hilly stretches of Sichuan province that were stricken by Monday's magnitude-7.9 quake, China's deadliest in three decades. Tens of thousands spent a second night outdoors, some sleeping under plastic sheeting, others bused to a stadium in the city of Mianyang, on the edge of the disaster area.

Street lamps were switched on in Mianyang on Tuesday night, but all the buildings were dark and deserted after the government ordered people out of them for fear of aftershocks. Security guards were posted at apartment blocks to keep people out.

The industrial city of 700,000 people ? home to the headquarters of China's nuclear weapons design industry ? was turned into a thronging refugee camp, with residents sleeping outdoors.

"I'm cold. I don't dare to sleep, and I'm worried a building is going to fall down on me," said Tang Ling, a 20-year-old waitress wrapped in a borrowed pink down jacket and camped outside the Juyuan restaurant with three co-workers. "What's happened is so cruel. In one minute to have so many people die is too tragic."

As night fell, a first wave of 200 soldiers entered the town of Wenchuan, near the epicenter, trudging across ruptured roads and mudslides, state television said. Initial reports from troops said one nearby town could account for only 2,300 survivors out of 9,000 people, China Central Television said.

At least 12,012 deaths occurred in Sichuan alone while another 323 died in five other provinces and the metropolis of Chongqing, state media reported. That toll seemed likely to jump sharply as rescue teams reached hard-hit towns.

The devastation and ramped-up rescue across large, heavily populated region of farms and factory towns strained local governments. Food dwindled on the shelves of the few stores that remained open. Gasoline was scarce, with long lines outside some stations and pumps marked "empty."

Buses carried survivors away from Beichuan, which was flattened ? a few buildings standing amid piles of rubble in a narrow valley, according to CCTV video.

More than 10,000 people from there and surrounding areas packed Mianyang's Jiuzhou Gymnasium, with empty water bottles, boxes of instant noodles and cigarette cartons littering the ground.

"I saw rocks and earth rolling down the hill, and they destroyed whatever they hit below," said a farmer who only gave his surname, Chen, from the village of Leigu near Beichuan. "There's nothing I can do about this. It's all in the hands of the government."

In the provincial capital of Chengdu, FM-91.4 all-traffic radio station operated around the clock, reading text messages sent by survivors of stricken areas to let relatives know they are alive.

The government's high-gear response aimed to reassure Chinese while showing the world it was capable of handling the disaster and was ready for the Aug. 8-24 Olympics in Beijing. Although the government said it welcomed outside aid, officials said that the assistance would be confined to money and supplies, not to foreign personnel.

As Prime Minister Wen Jiabao crisscrossed the disaster area to oversee relief efforts, the official Xinhua news agency cited the Defense Ministry as saying that some 20,000 soldiers and police arrived in the disaster area, with 30,000 more on the way by plane, train, truck and on foot.

"We will save the people," Wen said through a bullhorn to survivors in Shifang, where two chemical plants collapsed and buried more than 600 people, according to CCTV. "As long as the people are there, factories can be built into even better ones, and so can the towns and counties."

The Finance Ministry said it had allocated $123 million in quake aid.

At the world famous Wolong National Nature Reserve, all 86 pandas were reported safe late Tuesday in the first word since communications with the preserve were cut off. A group of 31 British tourists panda-watching in the preserve also returned safely to Chengdu, the Foreign Ministry said, although there was no word on 12 missing Americans on a World Wildlife Fund tour.

Still, prospects for survivors in the quake zone dwindled. Only 58 people were pulled from demolished buildings across the quake area so far, China Seismological Bureau spokesman Zhang Hongwei told Xinhua.

Weeping parents held a vigil in a steady outside a collapsed school in the town of Juyuan, where more than 900 high school students were initially trapped. Only one survivor has been found: a girl pulled free by rescue team.

Bowing to public calls, Beijing Olympics organizers scaled down the boisterous torch relay, saying Wednesday's leg in the southeastern city of Ruijin would begin with a minute of silence and more somber ceremonies. People along the route for the torch, which next month is scheduled to arrive in quake-hit areas, would be asked for donations, an organizing committee spokesman said.

In the areas around Mianyang, more than 7,300 people died and 18,000 more were believed trapped in rubble, most in Beichuan. Amid the rubble, CCTV showed the six-story Beichuan Hotel listing, half its first story collapsed. Medical teams tried to treat the wounded in dirt courtyards littered with broken furniture and concrete.

Though Wen and others called for air drops of emergency supplies to hard-to-reach areas, rain impeded efforts for a second day, and Xinhua said a group of paratroopers called off a rescue mission.

France's nuclear protection watchdog said it did not know whether there had been any damage to Chinese nuclear facilities in the quake region. Without giving specifics, the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety said "some" facilities were less than 60 miles from the epicenter.

Strong aftershocks ? one of magnitude-6, according to Chinese seismologists ? hit Chengdu, the region's usually busy commercial center.

Expressions of sympathy and offers of help poured in from Japan and the European Union. Russia was sending a plane with 30 tons of relief supplies, the Interfax news agency said. Chinese President Hu Jintao discussed the disaster by phone with President Bush.

The U.S. is offering an initial $500,000 in relief in anticipation of an appeal by the International Red Cross, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

While welcoming the support, the Chinese government suggested that aid would be confined to supplies and money, not foreign personnel.

"We welcome funds and supplies. We can't accommodate personnel at this point," Wang Zhenyao, the Civil Affairs Ministry's top disaster relief official, told reporters in Beijing.

The Dalai Lama, who has been vilified by Chinese authorities who blame him for recent unrest in Tibet, offered prayers for the victims. The epicenter skirts the Tibetan highlands, where some communities staged anti-government protests in March.

Seismologists said the quake was on a level the region sees once every 50 to 100 years. The region's last strong quake was in 1933, when a magnitude 7.5 quake killed more than 9,300 people. Monday's quake was powered up the pent-up stress, experts said.

"I don't think this is unheard of," said Amy Vaughn of the U.S. Geological Survey. "It's more an issue of how long and how much stress has been built up in this region."

It is most unfortunate that there was a disaster in China so soon after the one in Burma.

The Burmese govt. is an assortment of isolationist thieves that seem to dislike the idea of accepting aid. The Chinese are no doubt not so paranoid about this, and will get the lion's share of what is available.

Burma is very rich in resources and very fertile, but the leadership is determined to keep it all for themselves.
Eventually they will be forced out, but they have been in power since the 1960's.

The strawman is not the attacks  ::)

It is the "argument" CU4 posted at the front of the article.

You need to make sure you understand the difference between sarcasm, and a strawman arguement.

Both are employed by people who cannot make a cogent argument?

Okay, so many. many people have been unjustly treated in Muslim countries.

Is making this stop the duty of Americans? How is this so? Please explain.

I would think that it is a violation of the UN Declaration of Rights, and would be the UN's business. The US Supreme Court has already declared that the US Constitution does not apply beyond the borders of the US to non-US citizens, so we have no legal way of enforcing a ban on such nasty behavior.

While is is true that stoning an apostate is immoral, it is NOT against US law, just as US capital punishment would be illegal and seen as immoral in Denmark, but it is not preventable by Danish law so long as the criminal is not Danish and the crime and punishment do not occur in Denmark.

Are you prepared to give the UN the authority and police to enforce the UN Charter, or are you just going to blather on and on about how it offends you that a bunch of towelheads mistreat their fellows and do nothing more? I imagine that this would conjure up visions of black Belgian helicopters filled with EC SWAT troops. Or perhaps Ghurkas You don't want to mess with a Ghurka. They are tough. I met some in Belize. The Scottish and British troops gave them a very wide berth. It was not clear what Ghurkas do for fun, as they did not frequent Belizean bars, even to play darts.

Remember the UN Charter might stop capital punishment or close down Guantanamo.

Burqa bomber kills 12
15/05/2008 18:01  - (SA)

Kabul - A suicide bomber wearing a burqa - Muslim garb - attacked a police patrol at a crowded market in western Afghanistan on Thursday, killing at least 12 people and wounding 27 others, officials said.

Police tried to stop the bomber seconds before the blast in the Dilaram district of Farah province, said provincial official Younus Rasoul.

Provincial Governor Rohul Amin said the bomber was a woman, But the Taliban, who claimed responsibility for the blast, said the bomber was a man named Mullah Khalid.

Five policemen, including a district police chief, and seven civilians were among the dead, Amin said. Another 27 people, including 11 police and 16 civilians were wounded.

Rasoul gave a higher death toll, saying 15 died including 12 civilians. It was not possible to reconcile the differing figures.

Afghanistan is battling a Taliban-led insurgency that is strongest in the east and south. Militants launched more than 140 suicide bombings in the country in 2007, and many of those killed have been civilians.

At least 1 200 people - mostly militants - have died in insurgency-related violence in 2008, according to a tally compiled by The Associated Press.
