Cartoons lead to arrest of Dutch artist

Published: May 16, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Print story Email to a friend Font size:AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, May 16 (UPI) -- A Dutch cartoonist has been arrested following a lengthy investigation into allegations his work was discriminatory to other races, authorities say.

Radio Netherlands said Friday that the artist, who works under the pseudonym Gregorius Nekschot, was arrested and had a number of his materials seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

The investigation into Nekschot, who has kept his identity hidden since 2005, was initially brought about after an imam complained about the artist's works.

The imam alleged the works were insulting and discriminatory against both Muslims and individuals of other races, Radio Netherlands said.

The radio report said while Nekschot was released one day after Tuesday's arrest, Parliamentary Member Boris van der Ham has questioned why the cartoonist was arrested for his "extremely controversial" works.

Says Amsterdam public prosecutor spokeswoman Sanne van Meteren: ?We suspect him of insulting people on the basis of their race or belief, and possibly also of inciting hate.?

But what of his dread works? As reported, a recent cartoon on his web site caricatured a Christian fundamentalist and Muslim fundamentalist as zombies who met at an anti-gay rally and now wished to marry.

Mr Nekschot wants to keep his identity secret to retain a sense of mystique and rebellion but Anorak?s in-house profilers mark him out to be a fifteen year old white boy with a nascent weed habit and uncertain sexuality.

He may also be locked in an intense rivalry with Danish cartoonists, whom he despises. And the enemy are still getting headlines and stirring passion among they who seek victimhood above all else:

As Reuters reports, around 5,000 Afghans have been chanting ?death to Denmark? and ?death to the Netherlands?, protesting against the reprinting of a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad in Danish newspapers.

Protesters passed the lull after Friday prayers chanting ?death to Denmark,? ?death to America? and, lest they go off script, ?death to Jews?. A Danish flag is obtained from somewhere, and set alight.

Hard for any budding Dutch cartoonist to ignore the fame, and we wish him well with this quest to uphold the right to be offensivr, and whatever else he wishes to do in the privacy of his bedroom?

The kiddy show is mostly disturbing because it is so bloody awful. The supposed authority is a squeaky-voiced bunny that seems to need to have the news read to him by a little girl. It is terrible propaganda, and by terrible, I mean very unconvincing.

The Trix bunny might make me want to eat Trix. The Nescafe bunny might want to make me drink Qwick. This Islamic bunny gives me an uncontrollable desire to see what is on all the other channels. Is hew assuming the role of a stupid grandfather and an avenging angel of Islam at the same time? Gaaa!

As for the cartoonist, really. No one needs to arrest cartoonists for anything.
