Crosby, Stills and Nash brought the audience to their feet when they
performed ?Denver? at their concert on June 26 at the Wells Fargo Theatre
in Denver. ?Denver? is a remade version of the Come Up to Denver
Campaign?s remade version of Graham Nash?s original song ?Chicago?. In
March, Graham Nash gave permission to Colorado activists to rerecord his
song for the 40th anniversary of the 1968 DNC in Chicago. That version,
?Come Up to Denver? is now a rallying cry for anti-war activists from
around the country to converge on Denver for Democratic National
Convention, August 24-28, 2008 and protest the war. We are so honored the
CSN played this song at their concert in Denver. We hope that everyone who
hears it will be inspired to help spread the word. ?No one else can take
your place!?

You can see the video of CSN?s performance of ?Denver? on our home page:

Recreate ?68 threatens Democrat convention in Denver
By Michelle Malkin  ?  March 21, 2008 09:46 AM ?When things blow up because the police have to enforce a permit that the Democrats got, don?t blame us for that.?

Remember that quote. Protest organizers from ?Recreate ?68″ are throwing a tantrum over the Democrat Party?s permit process. Will they ignore it as an idle threat? Or, keeping in mind the history of left-wing violence against law enforcement, will they take the nutballs seriously for once? Via the Rocky Mountain News (hat tip - reader Katharine):

Piss-poor poster IMHO.

1968 was a great year, but the Movement needs to use the idiom of the 21st Century to recruit the activists of the 21st Century.  You can't make 1968 in 2008 and you shouldn't try.  We need a whole new language, a new Port Huron Statement and I don't see it happening.  I think America's salvation will come, like Germany's or Argentina's, through defeat on the battlefield.  The time may have passed when America could save itself from itself.  (Though maybe not - - see the post on Who Would Jesus Vote For? the newer flavour of the American Evangelical movement.)

it's not about ending the war it is about protesting the war.

It is about the identity politics that goes with that whole schtick.

Recreate68 is narcissistic preening.

BT:  <<Recreate68 is narcissistic preening.>>

Reluctantly and sadly, I have to agree with you.

plane:  <<Who thinks of 68 as a success?>>

Nobody.  68 was the high-water mark of a movement that is still receding.  I think of 68 as the year when I and almost everyone I knew felt more optimism than I ever felt before or since.  We lived in a state of anticipation, exultation, joy and hope.  I will never forget the Tet Offensive or May 68 in Paris, the student-worker revolt.  There wasn't a day when I didn't feel that the Revolution was "right around the corner."  When I think of 68 now, it's with such sadness that you probably can't imagine.  So much potential, so much loss.  So much that could have been.  What a fucking tragedy.

Mikey i think your goals were a lot diffrerent than the majority of the anti-warriors. I doubt they wanted your kind of revolution.

Hmmm.

Can hedonism coexist with communism?

<<Mikey i think your goals were a lot diffrerent than the majority of the anti-warriors. I doubt they wanted your kind of revolution.>>

1968 was a coming together of a lot of different movements, some more political, some less.  We didn't know what KIND of Revolution would come out of that common cause, we just knew or felt that revolutionary change was about to happen.  It was in the air.

<<Can hedonism coexist with communism?>>

"If I can't dance, I don't want to be in your Revolution." - -  Emma Goldman.
I would say yes, ideally.  Communism too was a work in progress.  There was a right way to do communism and there was a wrong way.  There is nothing wrong with communism feeling its way, correcting its mistakes.  Part of the optimism of 68 was that the SDS and the French student movement ("Sous les pav?s, la plage") may have evolved a more joyous form of communism or even of anarchism.  That was the feeling, new forms, new ways.  The hardest thing to explain to my kids is that feeling of optimism that prevailed in 1968 - - they never knew it.

McGovern was 1972.

How embarrasing ,I have mixed the events in my memory. Gotta improve my timeline.

I was pretty young at the time.

There will be no recreation of 1968, because there is no draft now. Everyone in the military is someone who at some point volunteered.
In 1968 it was an arbitrary lottery, which made all the young men feel like each and every one of them was threatened. Which, of course, there were.

There wasn't a lottery in 68. There was a lot of jockeying for deferments.

But you are correct in surmising that 68 was more about saving one's own butt than it was of revolution and optimism. That and the chicks.

====================================
It is really difficult to get a bunch of people as anti-intellectual and as diverse as the American people to embrace revolution.

"Make love, not war" is a no-brainer. Especially if there is a nubile young chick eager to make love. It does not take a lot of practice tpo be a great lover, and you don't need to go out and buy expensive equipment or even take lessons.

The draft was the impulse behind the antiwar movement.

Multiple choice (a) fun  (b) boot camp, followed by possible death

You have these kids, who have been told a bazillion times: "Buy this: it will make you happy, it will make you sexy, it will cause you to get laid".

And then they discover the grisley truth that (a) you can't buy it because you have to get your head shaved, your personality trashed and sent off to war, and (b) you would have to work your butt off to maybe be able to buy it, and (c) it is unlikely to make you happy, anyway.

When one is 17 or 18, a thirty-year mortgage is almost as unappealing as getting blown to bits in Nam.
