The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) held an event on Monday, the opening day of their party’s national convention in Denver, and they needed a bigger room than they did when they met at the Democratic convention in Boston in 2004. Then, there were Democratic governors in 22 states to 28 Republican governors. But a six-seat gain in the big swing year of 2006 exactly reversed those numbers, giving the Democrats their current hold on 28 governors’ seats.

The Democratic governors meeting Monday projected confidence that reflected their swelled ranks, and they said they could and should bring their leadership of their states’ political organizations to bear to help Illinois Sen. Barack Obama win the presidency.

“Governors can move elections,” said Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer , who won an open Republican seat in 2004 and is heavily favored for re-election this year.
