Joe Biden praises FDR's TV speech in 1929

Biden garbles Depression history

Joe Biden's denunciation of his own campaign's ad to Katie Couric got so much attention last night that another odd note in the interview slipped by.

He was speaking about the role of the White House in a financial crisis.

"When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the princes of greed," Biden told Couric. "He said, 'Look, here's what happened.'"

As Reason's Jesse Walker footnotes it: "And if you owned an experimental TV set in 1929, you would have seen him. And you would have said to yourself, 'Who is that guy? What happened to President Hoover?'"

I get the feeling Biden is going to drop out of the race.

And i think that is going to hurt Obama more than help him

BT

it hurts Obama if Hillary refuses.

it hurts Obama if Biden is canned and does not fake an illness

i heard Biden is attracting sparse crowds and not bringing in any new money

Obama's first decision was a disaster!

Biden is a walking gaffe machine.

If Biden really did mention FDR giving a TV speech in 1929, someone needs to assign him a fact checker. FDR didn't become president until 1933, and TV was basically a rich geek's toy in 1929, a year in which one could count all the geeks on one hand.

This is completely a moot point and not even worth comment.

Roosevelt did explain on the radio what the causes of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 were during and after the 1932 election, so he was a few years off. The point he was trying to make was a valid one. A good leader understands what has happened and tries to educate the public about it.

Hoover thought it was a lack of trust and that the government had no business trying to rectify the constant swings in the market. No one wanted to hear that, or to vote for a president who vowed to do nothing on principle, and he rightfully went down in smoke and flames, and the country wisely rejected every Republican president from 1932 to 1952.
