McCain Didn't Even Read Treasury Proposal

Though Sen. John McCain says the nation's current financial crisis requires "all hands on deck" because "the whole future of the American economy is in danger," he admitted in an interview in Cleveland on Tuesday that he hadn't even read the Bush administration's proposed rescue plan that was unveiled over the weekend.

Did you catch his response to the question, did he read the President's proposal?  It was "I have not had a chance to see it."

That was hilarious - - he hasn't had a chance.  Something so important that he drops his own campaign, but actually READ a document?  "I haven't had a chance."  Of course he had a chance - - the President's office probably circulated it to every legislator, but in any case, all he had to do was ask.  What does "I haven't had a chance" really mean?  that "The big kids wouldn't let me see it?"  "The dog ate it?"

Even in the smallest ways, this guy reveals  himself to be the hopeless fuck-up I always knew him to be.  Wonder how much of a landslide Obama's gonna get in November?  I think McCain's best chance from now on is to stay in bed with the flu.  No interviews.  Nothing.

If this is a gaffe , and history is any guide , it won't be long until BHO will match it.

I still see a tight race coming , with the popular vote nearly equal and states with large electoral delegations and states winnable from the opposition column being key.

The idea behind political prediction markets is simple. Lots of people wager on the outcome of political campaigns: Who's going to be the Democratic presidential nominee? Will the Republicans take back the House? And when the votes are counted, the winning bettors collect. The thrill of prediction markets for political junkies is that they harness "the wisdom of crowds." A single person's bet on an election outcome isn't very good, but thousands of bets, with real stakes, are more likely to predict the correct result than even the best pundit. The Iowa Electronic Markets, the big daddy of the political prediction markets, is consistently better at forecasting winners than pre-election polls. (Read a 2003 Slate "Explainer" about prediction markets here.)

I think you're right, plane.  It was foolish of me to focus on a single gaffe.

I think the Democrats have got to hit McCain hard on the essentials - - he's a rich old white guy who is just totally out to lunch.  That clip of "The fundamentals of our economy are strong" has to be played against headlines of the roof falling in - -and questions, "Can we afford to have a guy like this in charge?"

The other weak point - - his campaign manager, the statement that he hasn't been involved with Freddy in three years and some kind of graphic representation of $15,000 falling into the guy's company's account every month like clockwork.  John McCain IN BED WITH SEVEN CORPORATE LOBBYISTS (graphic of a very crowded bed of fat greedy businessmen) - - Is HE the guy you really want to clean up Washington?

And the war - - 4,000 American dead, 300,000 Iraqis, wounded . . . oil at $  --- a gallon; McCain gave it the green light; only Barak Obama said it would be the disaster that it is.

Dude, this isn't a gaffe.  It's dereliction of duty.

Not to mention, it is proof positive that his whole "campaign suspension" is just a big stunt and nothing more.

Nonsense. The bill is fluid and has changed numerous times since Tuesday. McCain is there to broker a deal and bring in recalcitrant GOP members.

You guys really are clueless as to how government runs.

No, Bt, I think they know precisely how it's supposed to be run.  Us vs Them, Dems vs GOP, Liberals vs Conservatives, whoever's in power gets to dictate all policy, and neither compromise nor working with the other party, exists.

McCain is there in a vain attempt to appear "presidential" while ducking a debate that he didn't prepare for.  He's also there to try and re-capture the narrative of this election.

McCain has no more power to broker a deal than you do.

AFter 8 years of 'you're either with us or against us', 'if you're against the war, you're harming our troops' and unfettered absolute control over all three arms of the government, I'm surprised that you would be able to type the above comment in a post without the slightest tinge of sarcasm to it.

All the while, Bush was anything BUT some hard nosed, uber conservative, pushing policy that was always some fanatical RW position, and instead was frequently bucking his own conservative base.  And no, no sarcasm was necessary

But i appreciate your concession that indeed, that's your position, one in which it's our way or the highway, and screw compromise or working with the other party.  In that case, Obama is indeed, your completely underqualifed guy

More nonsense, if McCain was being presidential he would be demanding a bill he could live with and urging fellow senators and house members to put aside differences and come together for the common good. He would be stressing the urgency of the situation.

Sure he was. How many times did he threaten to veto any cuts for his little war? How many times did he refuse any legislation that would set a timetable to bring the troops home? How many times did he hint that it would be somehow unpatriotic/treason/aiding and abetting the enemy if we did so? And if you could get his nose out of Bush's ass long enough to see him, there was McCain, tagging along behind.
