I am all for green buildings. The biggest problem is zoning.
When I wanted another carport, I called the county office, and they told e that my carport had to be built of approved materials. She would not send me a list of said materials, not tell me whpo could. "Your contractor will have to tell you:, she said.
"But I want to build this myself". I said.
She gave me the number of some guy who didn't pick up the phone in four months and I did the whole thing myself on the weekends, so no inspectop would catch me at it, subversively trying to build my own carport.
My construction made it through Katrina and Wilma, so I must have done it right.
If I wanted to make a house of tires or adobe, I am sure I would never get approval.
