A Rocky Road For Obama If Elected

If Obama becomes President his popularity will sag and he will make unpopular decisions widely viewed as unsound.

No, that's not my opinion.  My source is the always entertaining Joe Biden, who seems intent on lowering expectations to the point that the nation will marvel if Obama has the competence and vision to remember to show up on Jan 20 to be sworn in.

"I promise you, you all are gonna be sitting here a year from now going, 'Oh my God, why are they there in the polls? Why is the polling so down? Why is this thing so tough?' We're gonna have to make some incredibly tough decisions in the first two years. So I'm asking you now, I'm asking you now, be prepared to stick with us. Remember the faith you had at this point because you're going to have to reinforce us."

"There are gonna be a lot of you who want to go, 'Whoa, wait a minute, yo, whoa, whoa, I don't know about that decision'," Biden continued. "Because if you think the decision is sound when they're made, which I believe you will when they're made, they're not likely to be as popular as they are sound. Because if they're popular, they're probably not sound."

I don't like the sound of that.  The good decisions won't be popular?  The suspense is killing me.  And speaking of killing me, what about this fear-mongering from Biden?

"Mark my words," the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. "It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy."

"I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate," Biden said to Emerald City supporters, mentioning the Middle East and Russia as possibilities. "And he's gonna need help. And the kind of help he's gonna need is, he's gonna need you - not financially to help him - we're gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it's not gonna be apparent initially, it's not gonna be apparent that we're right."

Oh, great - so per Biden, after Obama gets the 3 AM phone call we will all think he blew it.  I deplore this negative, attack-oriented campaigning.  C'mon, Joe, give me a reason to Go With O!

Hmm - people deplored similar fear-mongering from Hillary and Rudy.  Seasons change.

MORE: Jim Geraghty worries that the Senate won't be able to advise and consent in a crisis:

I'm hoping that, if Obama is elected, he nominates the best attorney general, secretary of state, secretary of defense, secretary of homeland security, etc., he can find. But if a crisis is unfolding, the Senate will probably be under enormous pressure to confirm the nominees and get them into their jobs as quickly as possible. That seems like less than ideal circumstances for the Senate to exercise appropriate scrutiny.

When did we expect scrutiny from Harry Reid and his 59 fellow Dems?

Jennifer Rubin has fun:

Well, golly, if Obama is so untested that we will have a series of international crises ? at the very time we are in a financial meltdown ? which will make the Cuban Missile Crisis look like a walk in the park, shouldn?t we vote for the other guy who will keep all the miscreants in their place? Now, maybe we should rest easy because, according to Biden, ?I?ve forgotten more about foreign policy than most of my colleagues know, so I?m not being falsely humble with you.? (Maybe Hezbollah?s occupation of Lebanon was one of the things he forgot.)

The Captain reminds us of Kennedy's meeting with Krushchev "without preconditions":

What resulted?  The Berlin Wall and the Cuban missile crisis. Kennedy wound up trading strategic intel and missile installations in western Asia in exchange for Soviet withdrawal of the nuclear missiles from Cuba.  The entire Kennedy administration turned out to be a foreign-policy disaster that was only overlooked because of the tragic assassination of Kennedy in Dallas in 1963.

I agree with Biden.  Obama is exactly like Kennedy in this regard, and our enemies will test us by threatening our interests around the globe if we elect Obama.  I?d rather avoid the problem altogether and elect a man who puts enough fear into the minds of our enemies to keep them from testing us at all.

Biden is trying to put lipstick on the Bay of Pigs.

Anyone who wants to test Obama would also want to test McCain.  Maybe the tests will be different, but between the two of them, I trust McCain less than Obama.  Both the Palin pick and the will debate/won't debate "cancel my campaign!" shenanigans indicate to me that this is one pair of hands you DON'T want on the wheel at speeds over 90.  This man is obviously unstable.

Obama is cool and, so far, unflappable.  McCain is an erratic, dangerous old geezer, sorely challenged in the brain-power department by Obama.  He's just not a smart man, which Obama so very obviously is.  In the one big test of judgment that has emerged so far (supporting or not the start of Bush's war against Iraq) there is a very obvious test which was failed by Hillary, Biden, McCain and many others.  Obama was one of the select few who passed that test with flying colours.

I would trust him to pass future tests as well as he has the one big one in all their pasts.  I'm not saying that he is infallible, but if a test does come along, he has a much better chance of meeting it than does McCain.

" McCain is an erratic, dangerous old geezer, ..."

Good reason for the potential challenger to wait for the next president.

Check out Hugo Chavez , he is ramping up and prepping his people to fend off an American invasion.

I think he really feels the parellel to Kennedy ,and wants to do as well against Obama as Castro did for the Bay of Pigs invasion.

<<Good reason for the potential challenger to wait for the next president.>>

You're surely not arguing that irrational, poorly considered Presidential actions will benefit Americans?

A challenger might have more sophisticated ideas than just challenging America to a brawl and then winning it.  What if he seeks to draw America into another long-drawn-out battle that it can't win, like the Viet Nam War or Iraq?  How many more $3 trillion dollar mistakes do you think America can stand?

<<Check out Hugo Chavez , he is ramping up and prepping his people to fend off an American invasion.>>

Invasion is only one of the things that America can throw at him, but I think Hugo's getting ready for anything and everything.  He'd have to be crazy if he weren't.

<<I think he really feels the parellel to Kennedy ,and wants to do as well against Obama as Castro did for the Bay of Pigs invasion.>>

Well, if he does as well as the Iraqis have done, he'll sink their ship.  But I think he needs allies closer to hand.  He should be undermining Colombia so they can't jump in when the shit hits the fan.  Everything should be going to the Revolutionary forces in Colombia, which seem to be on the ropes at present.  This is a good time for Russia or China to take a hand, but they're neither one of them ready to take on the U.S. at present.

JFK  was manoeuvred by the outgoing Eisenhower adminstration to go ahead with the Bay of Pigs.  It ultimately, by the way it unfolded, cost him his life when he called off the air support promised by the outgoing administration.  He knew he was playing with fire, but Ike and the Dulles brothers, he felt, had boxed him in and left him no alternative.  Here's hoping Obama will be smart enough to break free of any constraints that the criminal Bush administration may have planned for him.

Russia is sending a small fleet to visit Hugo.

Biden may have been looking at this.

Al Quiada tested Clinton, he failed. Three times.

Al Quiada tested Bush, he passed. With Flying colors.

Terrorists the world over view Obama, and democrats, as weak and untested. While Obiden is brain addled and a buffoon, his stupidity sometimes makes him forget himself and tell the truth. What I find most interesting about what he said is he begged for us to back them up on what will "appear" to be a stupid move after the test. What's Joe talking about? Will they do what comes natural and appease the attackers, surrender, and blame America? Or will they overreact in the other direction and pop off a nuke to prove Barry really does have a "steel" spin?

Either way, it's going to be fun to watch.

He actually also said that he knows of five scenarios that worry him. I could only come up with three, but he as a Senator might be much better briefed than I .

I wish he would tell more about what the potentials are that he is thinking of.

Please. Al Qaeda managed to wipe out three thousand Americans, and bin Laden managed to stay a free man for seven years. Juniorbush got lured into Iraq, where none of the terrorists were from. Now he has pissed away nearly a trillion dollars, and his wars are not over yet.

That is not a pass. It flies no colors.

I would expect you to say such things. The facts are of course different.

<<Russia is sending a small fleet to visit Hugo.

<<Biden may have been looking at this.>>

A small fleet on a friendly visit is bullshit, and Hugo knows it.  What's needed are naval bases and a permanent fighting presence on the ground and carrier-based.  I don't think Russia would spring for it.  They've got all the oil they need and no territorial ambitions in the Western Hemisphere.  Unfortunately, the old grounds of socialist solidarity is long gone.  China is in roughly the same position, plus it lacks even the naval capability.

Looks like Hugo's on his own when the dragon strikes, but he's got a good chance to bloody the dragon's nose at the very least and with the right breaks to deal the kind of crippling economic blow that the Iraqi Resistance has already done.  With further luck, an Islamic strike somewhere in the Middle East will keep  the U.S. off-balance and like Nazi Germany forced to fight on two fronts.

Any way we look at this, the days of the U.S. as a reincarnated Nazi Germany in international relations  are fast coming to a close.

You ,like Hugo Chavez and Senator Biden seem to be assuming that Obama is interested in attacking Venezuela.
