John McCain: Socialist

http://crooksandliars.com/silentpatriot/daily-show-flashback-mccain-socialis

Just another example of how indispensable Jon Stewart and the Daily Show are, catching things the media don't. McCain and Palin (indeed, the entire GOP establishment) have been bashing Obama as a "socialist" the past few days for having the audacity to propose raising the top tax rate from 36% to 39% while giving working folks (95% of the rest of us) some relief. The only problem: Stewart dug up footage of McCain making the exact same argument a scant eight years ago.

Stewart: "Now you can argue that this country has dabbled in socialism ever since the income tax was introduced, and that calling Obama's plan 'socialist' is a cynical ploy that even McCain realizes is a bankrupt tactic. Or, should I say, realized."

Audience member: "Why is it that someone like my father who goes to school for 13 years gets penalized in a huge tax bracket because he's a doctor."

McCain: "I think it's to some degree because we feel obviously that wealthy people can afford more."

Audience member: "Are we getting closer and closer to, like, socialism?"

McCain: "Here's what I really believe: That when you reach a certain level of comfort, there's nothing wrong with paying somewhat more."

Stewart: "That, of course, is the late socialist leader John Mccain. I believe he passed away during the Republican primaries. He will be missed."

Devastating. I smell a viral YouTube video brewing. Or an awesome Obama ad.

It is bad that McCain has shown some socialist thinking.

A viral video drives home the point , socialist thinking is bad.

Progressive tax rates date back to the 1930's, and are not really any form of socialism at all.
This is simply the dying gasp of a campaign that has run out of ideas, along with plumbers who make $250,000 per year and still fear that they won't have enough after taxes.

OK then McCain is innocent of the sin  of socialism?

That is a relief.

If it isn't socialism what is its proper term , "leveling" perhaps?

It is bad that McCain has shown some socialist thinking.

Is it really?  For me, this is one of the conundrums of having Obama now leading in the polls and appearing to be on the path to winning.  I'm sure you understand that, for me, the thought of a socialist US is definitely a step in the right direction and I think that Americans, perhaps in light of the current economic crisis, are not feeling too bad about it but I may be reading too much into Obama's lead.

But my support for a most perfect socialist union could reflect badly on Obama.  Of course, in here, it's no secret to anyone but in dealing with people in my day to day real world, I keep mum on it.  Personally, I don't believe for a second that Obama wants America to be a socialist nation.  I think he probably just wants to maintain the promises that lean towards socialism that the government has made.

A viral video drives home the point , socialist thinking is bad.

It does.  No it is not bad.  Socialist thinking gives you the military that you are oh so proud of.  Socialist thinking keeps the cops and firemen at hand in the event of emergency at your home.  Socialist thinking plays a part in the property values in your neighborhood.

Could the the production company be Glass Houses inc?

It could be but I don't think either side should be throwing any rocks.  I don't feel that Obama's campaign has done any yet.  That clip was disseminated from The Daily Show.

The proper term is "progressive taxation". It has existed for decades here. Even McCain's tax plan uses it: he proposes TWO tiers to the tax structure.

The alternative to progressive taxation, which even McCain advocates, is a flat tax.

But if the philosophy and reason of the tax is to close the distance in means between the top and bottom we can't call that a socialist impulse?

Who the F*ck cares?

The fact is that the poorest have not improved their salaries a dime since Juniorbush's election.
The middle class has barely kept up with inflation.
The fatcats-the 2% that Joe the Plumber aspires to- has made out like bandits.

I count two errors of fact and one distortion.
