More "CHANGE!"

Obama wants George Bush
Secretary of Defense to remain Pentagon Chief

Gates "to stay as Pentagon chief"

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates is to stay on in charge of the Pentagon when Barack Obama takes office as president,
according to US media reports.

Mr Gates was nominated to the role by President George W Bush in 2006 and has overseen a change of strategy in Iraq.

ABC News and Politico.com quoted officials saying Mr Gates would remain in the job for at least the first year of Mr Obama's administration.

This will insure that there is continuity, won't it? It is likely that Gates will be replaced after a new appointee has had sufficient experience to take over seamlessly. It seems to me that this is in the best interests of the country.

Suppose Getes was replaced immediately and something awful happened: you would go apesh*t posting how Obama was incompetent and a Liberal and this and that and probably the other as well.

Are you suggesting that Obama is obliged to change everything just for the sake of change?

It is the presidential decisions that people wanted to change.

I'll add to that. It's also a signal to our enemies. Obama is saying, don't think for one minute we're dropping our guard, or going soft.

Now that the administration is changing, he's taking over your old roll.

I am finding it soothing. I held onto my absentee ballot for weeks, because I just wasn't sure. There are a lot of things I liked about Obama from the start, but also some things I hated, and some things that just made me "nervous." And one of the things that made my nervous was the idea of very SUDDEN change and the dangers it might present to Americans and American interests.

For example, I never supported massive and rapid changes in Iraq. I felt that moving too fast just to improve the image might pose later security threats both in the Middle East and for Americans everywhere. (That said, I am also one of those who felt that we never should have been there in the first place. But now that we ARE there, it is our responsibility to clean up the mess we made.)

Seeing that he is bring in very good management, easing through things and taking time with what needs to be done is reassuring. I also hope it will relax the "sky is falling" folks who are waiting for the world to end.
