The thing about the Napoleonic invasion of Spain was that Napoleon's brother José Bonaparte was far less oppressive in every way that the Spanish Bourbon kings he replaced, Fernando VII and his son Carlos. Bonaparte abolished the Inquisition and the Autos da fe that followed heresy trials, he encouraged freedom of thought and even gave Spain its first constitution. But the people were severely brainwashed and identified Napoleon with godlessness and even Satan.
Goya managed to continue as a court painter for Bonaparte and Carlos IV when he returned. In his famous painting of the royal family, Carlos looks like a total halfwit and his son looks exactly like Godoy, the prime minister. The Queen looks like a witch. The royal family loved the painting, nevertheless.
This painting is included in the Wikipedia listing for Goya.
