Is this a humor appeal or a play on mens fear of rejection?
It's both, of course. Men don't give a damn about jewelry. It's a bad investment and it generally only appeals to women. The idea is to get the poor saps into the jewelry department, where they can be sold the high-profit, high priced stuff that brings in the big profits.
Men are generally shamed into buying jewelry.
