President Obama and first lady Michelle
Obama earned $5.5 million in 2009, most of which came from the sale of Mr. Obama's books, according to tax returns made public by the White House Thursday.
The couple paid nearly $1.8 million in federal income taxes and $163,000 in state income taxes. They donated about $329,000 to 40 different charities, in addition to Mr. Obama's donation of his $1.4 million Nobel Prize money, which he gave to 10 charities.
The Obamas' largest single contributions to charity were $50,000 each to CARE, an organization fighting global poverty, and the United Negro College Fund.
Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his wife Jill reported a joint income of $333,000, giving $4,820 --
1.44 percent -- of that to charity. Estimates by charitable donations find that most givers donate between 3 and 5 percent of their salaries.
The Bidens paid $71,000 in federal income taxes, and more than $12,000 in taxes to Delaware and nearly $1,500 in Virginia.
