NHL suspends Stars' Sean Avery for crude comments

DALLAS – The NHL suspended Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery indefinitely Tuesday for making a crude reference to former girlfriends while talking with reporters.

Avery's inflammatory comments came following a morning skate in Calgary, Alberta, where the Stars were to play the Flames on Tuesday night. He approached a group of reporters, asked if a camera was present, then said he wanted to say one thing: "I'm really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada," he said. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my (former girlfriends)."

He used a crass term to refer to ex-girlfriends now dating other people. (my note: He called them "sloppy seconds")

Avery's ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert, is dating Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf and had been romantically linked to Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens. Avery also dated model and actress Rachel Hunter, the girlfriend of Los Angeles Kings center Jarrett Stoll.

Hours after Avery spoke, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the punishment, saying Avery made "inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game."

Avery will meet with Bettman before his punishment is settled. That get-together is likely to happen soon.

"I completely support the league's decision to suspend Sean Avery," Stars owner Tom Hicks said in a statement. "Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so."

Avery is a noted "pest," the kind of player who delights in getting under the skin of opponents, and whom fans love to hate. During last season's playoffs, Avery — then with the New York Rangers — stood in front of New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur and blocked his view by waving his hand and stick in the goalie's face. The next day, the league put in the so-called "Avery Rule" to prohibit such shenanigans.

Avery got a measure of revenge by scoring three goals in the series victory. But he lacerated his spleen in the following round against Pittsburgh, requiring a stay in intensive care and ending his stint with the Rangers.

Despite his tough-guy image on the ice, the 28-year-old Avery has cultivated another image in his private life: Fashionista. He's pursued his interest in the fashion world by interning with Vogue magazine. He's also broken into pop culture through appearances on MTV and in tabloid gossip columns; he also grabbed a spot on People's "Sexiest Scars" list for a gash on his lip.

Dallas signed Avery to a $15.5 million, four-year deal in July, hoping his grittiness would help last season's Western Conference finalists. Instead, the injury-riddled Stars went into Tuesday night's game with only 20 points, fewest in the Western Conference and near the bottom of the NHL.

This is Avery's third team in as many seasons, and fourth of his career. His contract includes a limited no-trade clause.

that`s how players lose endorsement contracts.
they had to suspend him or risk losing serious money.
mike vick was losing serious contracts for his behaviour .
and this was before the dogfights

This is totally ridiculous. It's politically correctness at it's worst. Suddenly using a certain turn of phrase is grounds for denying a man his living? It's only going to get worse.

I was listening to Maxum radio the other day and they describe this sort of thing as the "Pussification" of America.

not sure Pussification is the right
more like a  correction to a problem.
ever had a loud and offensive relative who through time gets less invited to family gatherings
we say in public we admire such behaviour but very few let thier daughter go out with these guys.
as I stated before this kind of behaviour can cost the team money.

"Sloppy seconds" is pretty mild as an insult.

When Red Auerbach coached the Celtics every player had to wear a coat and tie in public. If they didn't comport themselves as upstanding represenatives of the Boston Celtics at all times they never put on a Celtics uniform on again.

Pussified? They won 9 NBA Championships under coach Auerbach, including 8 in a row. They won 6 more while Auerbach was either GM or president of the Celtics.

Yeah, pussified.

In case you hadn't noticed, the NBA now requires players to dress "up." No more gangsta threads. They wear suits or at least sport coats and tie. It hasn't done much for the league.

Anyway, it might be different if Avery had used the dreaded "C" word, but he didn't. He didn't even curse. He called them sloppy seconds. I agree with Ami, it's a term that's awfully mild for someone to get so exercised about, let alone suspended.

These guys are paid vast amounts of money to entertain the people, represent cities where they were rarely born, and serve as role models for kids. If they can't act like gentlemen, they should be replaced by men who will. It;s not like there was a shortage of undereducated overdeveloped lummoxes who want to earn a lot of money playing with balls long after their teenage years have passed. It's not like playing with a ball was a useful and productive thing, like plumbing, laying carpet or delivering mail.

Really? What do you know of my personal conduct? I suggest you stick to what you know.

Of course you are certainly not someone who I would consider an expert on anything. Especially what is and what is not exceptable personal conduct. That's really fucking rich.

They aren't paid to be role models. They're paid to do a job. This guys job is to score gaols and crack heads. I understand he does a good job of it. This is just more political correctness run amok. Rappers call women bitches and whores and nobody takes a pay check away from them. This guy calls his ex-girlfriends sloppy seconds and he's suspended?

I'll bet the league president is a democrat.

Pro sports teams represent the cities that sponsor them. Rappers are assholes, and why anyone ever buys their crap I do not know, but they are not representing anyone officially. Rich's views seem to most resemble those of a posturing thirteen-year old trying to impress older thugs and losers.

His job is to do whatever it is his employer wishes him to do.  If his employer wants him to sit on a bench and watch the game, that's what he'll do.  It may not be a smart decision on the part of the employer, but it is the employer's decision.  If the player doesn't like it, he can quit, go to a different team, or start up his own league.  The comment, in my opinion, is overblown and not worthy of suspension, but I don't get to make that call.  And the club owner said that he would have suspended the player even if the league hadn't.

The league president, Gary Bettman, is not at all popular in the NHL.  Just google "Gary Bettman" and see what you come up with.

Pro athletes are entertainers. When they cease to be entertaining, they get into trouble. The idea of a privately owned team, often owned by someone who does not live in that city, and composed of members from all over the place, actually representing a city or area is sort of hard to take seriously. When I was in high school I used to watch the games, and they were interesting, since I knew the people playing. After that, I lost interest, because there is no reason I should care what this bozo working for that other bozo, neither of whom has a thing to do with the city, does with a ball. Sports are often good exercise, but watching sports is a waste of time to me.

Nascar, where we watch rolling billboards run around and around in circles, waiting for one or more of them to crash and burst into flames is even more boring.

It doesn't bother me that  people actually enjoy watching such nonsense, but to take the disciplining or lack of same of some grown man who plays with a ball seriously  strikes me as a pretty immature way of relating to the world around one.

So other than a few people who were obviously always picked last for dodge ball, folks agree this is making a mountian out of a mole hill. Pro athlete's and athlete's in general exist in a world where these kinds of comments, and much worse, are common. However the left is determined to  make certain words illegal, certain subjects taboo. They're drugging boys so they no longer act like boys and pussifying men in general. I guess if you had to punish Avery for this, why not a fine? I wouldn't agree with that either but it makes more sense than suspending him.

I think immaturity is hating people who have more money than you, are better looking than you, smarter than you, or are better athlete's than you.

There's always going to be the nerd sitting in his mom's basement painting his Star Wars action figure's and plotting his revenge for the imagined slights of athlete's in high school. So I wouldn't expect such losers to understand what it is to be an student athlete let alone a professional.

The losers are the idiots who are still playing with balls for fame and glory in their thirties and forties.

The biggest losers are the morons who actually pay money or sit through two and a half hours of commercials to watch 60 minutes of "play" to watch them.

Knowing what a pro athlete's life is like is like knowing what it's like to be a vole.

I am not surprised that the  Corsican Brothers think sloppy seconds is mild for an insult . That is probly the only kind of sex y'all can get (being fat & ugly and all). The fact is that the  insult is really not directed at the women ( what self-respecting hockey puck would give a shit about them?) men but at the other players who would screw someone who still had another man's semen in her vagina.

>>The losers are the idiots who are still playing with balls for fame and glory in their thirties and forties.<<

And getting paid millions of dollars to do it? Hardly foolish. It's true our culture doesn't reward people who deserve "fame and glory" more than althete's. Firefighters, police, just to name a couple. Like it or not sports is a huge part of American culture. Only a very few have anything like animosity towards sports figures. You know the type. Nerdie little Mommas boys who are to afraid to try sports, never had a date with a real live girl.

>>The biggest losers are the morons who actually pay money or sit through two and a half hours of commercials to watch 60 minutes of "play" to watch them.<<

I don't think so. The biggest losers are people who just hate those big jocks and their fame and fortune. Just like they hate the evil rich and anyone who they envy for their success.

Again, there is nothing at all wrong with sports. Most of them are good exercise. But WATCHING SPORTS is not exercise at all, and "trying sports" would be playing, not watching. With regard to sex, again, practice is not the same thing as voyerism, is it? But guys like you probably don't know the difference.

Honestly, why did you feel the need to stick your big fat ass into this in the fist place? You could have just kept your big mouth shut, but no, you felt the need to inteject your colossal stupidity. You're far far to stupid to keep up Cindy.

You haven't got two brain cells to rub together you greasy little coquette. Do something productive with your time. Find a man. I'm sure there's a guy out there willing to over look your debilitating lack of substance.

Since you felt the need to start something, let me ask you, do you write like this when you're writing in school? Because you really come off as a complete incompetent when you're writing. You actually have a college degree? From where? I'd really like to know so I can warn people about what a terrible school it was to allow a stupid hack like yourself to influence young minds.

I am telling you the guy was suspended not for insulting women . Hockey fans dont give a shit about women. It is the other players who were being insulted. Hockey animal's don't want to be thought of as potentially gay and screwing your buddies former vagina somehow lessens these macho freaks. I don't think sloppy seconds has anything to do with who dated who first.
It has more to do with multiple partners involved during the same time period.
Gang bang and pulling a train are other terms that mean about the same thing and do not reflect highly upon the women involved.

Thanks for the moderation Chicky. I have been out of pocket with some unscheduled heart tuneups.

Don't take things for granted. I pray that you don't smoke. Cuz...smoking is going to cross paths with your stents. You know that, I am sure.

I am grateful you are around, Bill. I know we have butt heads, but you are our Main Man on here....I wish you well.

Enjoy life.....each and every day...as shall I .

I wish this for each of us on the board...including ole dog barking in the night causing neighbors to bitch and whine......richpo. ;)

Wow.

well, I overheard a nurse on the floor talking to another nurse....A stents is not a "miracle worker". I cringed:(

But, my mama is doing so much better.....at 83 she has more air in her lungs now with the "Oxygen tube" therapy

and no more smoking...Her memory is weak but she's a tough West Virginian...by God. I love her so much.

Hang in there, dear Bill.

Hmmm. Good point. My one hospitalization was for a major surgery and I wasn't walking anywhere for a few days. I could have quit right then, but when I got home... guess I'll have to go get myself another major surgery for a second chance at that!

Speaking of smoking, living in Jordan is kind of like '60s or '70s in the U.S. There majority of folks smoke and they smoke everywhere, legally - in the grocery store, at the office, in the waiting room of the hospital. Major brands of cigarettes go for about $10 per carton, generic for far less. I have come to appreciate the controls in the U.S. (particularly not being able to smoke at the desk at work as I clearly have no self-control until someone tells me I can't).

That I understand, for certain. It's a strange thing - even when everything in your brain tells you what to do, you remain unconvinced on some level. And it's NOT just the addiction to nicotine, as many think. If that were the only issue, the nicotine patch would have helped more people.

BT, I really stirred the pot for you - so sorry for that.

I think I assumed that most of the group - from way back anyway - knew all of this. Certainly we talked about smoking enough back in the Yahoo Chat days, but I guess that's been a long time ago.

And Cindy, I'm curious to know what "folks" find BT disgusting? That was a horrible, horrible thing to say. What on earth came over you? Because you put him on the defensive about smoking and he responded?

Off the top of my head, I can think of a few people in this group who smoke, myself included. We are not ignorant of the health warnings printed on each pack of smokes. That they are bad for health is well known, and no matter how well intended your Public Service Announcements might be... umm... we already know. No offense intended, but belaboring the point is nothing short of irritating.

It's typical Cindy. She butts in, says something stupid, then complains about being called on it. It's also classic BT. It's funny as hell to watch him ask simple questions until her head explodes.

Thus the scanner clip. It's what I see every time it happens.

I've recently done something cold turkey. I had a 20+ year habit of drinking only diet sodas (two or more 2-liters per day) to the exclusion of everything else, including water. Some months ago I hung it up. Not quite sure why, but I've substituted and now drink at least 3 liters of water every day - sometimes more. (Then someone told me about a condition called a water overdose that can throw the electrolytes out of whack and possibly even kill you. Seems I can't win.)

Maybe there's some hope yet for the smoking.

I started smoking because it was soooo cool back in high school. I went to grad school in Mexico and smoked Mexican cigarettes (at the time all the bourgoise Mexicans smoked Raleighs) like Records, Filtrones and Deltas. When I returned to the US, they had added all manner of additives to cigarettes and so I smoked a pipe. In 1986, I realized that the only benefits of smoking were that it went well with coffee in the morning and gave me a slight dizzy feeling, it make me cough all the times, and I could count on at least one case of bronchitis every two years. So I just quit one day when I was on vacation in Honduras.

At sometime in the 1980's the sine qua non cigarette used to impress others in Mexico ceased to be regular Raleigh filters and became king size Marlboros. I wasn't there to see how they did this, but it must be one of the great ad campaigns of all time.

After pestering my sister for years about how she could stop coughing if she quit and hearing her say, between coughs, that she didn't cough all that much, I bought her a rolling machine, tobacco and tubes, and at least she is spending less than a third what she used to spend.

Oh, great, Henny.  Now I feel guilty about my Coke habit.

That's Coca-Cola, just to clarify.

I have to laugh at the commercial that shows a woman and a man sitting on a couch, and she says, "My husband gave up drinking soda and only drinks water, and he lost 15 lbs" (animation shows the guy's belly shrink).

"I gave up sodas and here's what happened" (boobs shrink).

And then the dog drinks out of its water bowl (dog gets smaller).

Drinking sweet things, even sweet no calorie things, makes me want to eat more sweet stuff. If I drink tomato juice or yerba mate or even some other herbal teas, I sense no need to be chewing on anything.

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama failed to give a straight answer when asked on a U.S. talkshow on Sunday whether he had managed to quit smoking.

In a country where cigarettes are responsible for one in five deaths and smoking costs tens of billions of dollars in health care, Obama has been under pressure to set an example by giving up his reported two-decade-old habit.

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press" program, interviewer Tom Brokaw told Obama he had ducked answering the question during an interview last month with ABC's Barbara Walters.

Noting that the White House was a no-smoking zone, Brokaw asked Obama, "Have you stopped smoking?"

"I have," Obama replied, smiling broadly. "What I said was that there are times where I have fallen off the wagon."

"Wait a minute," Brokaw interjected, "that means you haven't stopped."

We have social drinkers, who only drink once in a while on special occasions.

Many Indians seem to have been "social smokers", puffing on their soapstone pipes only for ceremonies and get-togethers. Of course, the idea that Indians smoked only tobacco is a bit of a myth.

Could it be that Obama is just a social smoker? I know a very few people who only smoke occasionally. The odds seem against it.

But still, Obama smoking is a personal matter. It's not the same as his being an active (as opposed to a recovering) alcoholic, who might put on a lampshade, doing the hootchie-koo and exposing his schlong at a state dinner. His smoking does not impede him from performing his duties. I think we can assume that he is capable of not setting the Lincoln bedroom ablaze.

FDR made cigarette holders stylish, and I am sure gained many votes in North Carolina, VA and Kentucky by being a tobaccoholic.
