     In Germany therecords of the Stazi were opened to the public and thouands of people discovered that their neighbors and family members were snitching on them. There was an amazeingly pervaseive system of secret agents spying on their co-workers , neighbors and freinds.

Well, philosophically, Professor, I guess you're pointing out the competition in legitimate values between the need for a statute of limitations or its equivalent on the one hand and the need to see justice done on the other.  I think both situations are in fact parallel in that they  illustrate the clash between two legitimate values.  The magnitude of the offence is obviously a big factor in determining how far to stretch the statute of limitations, I would think.  You'd be kind of pissed off to receive a notice to appear in court on some overtime parking charge that goes back 23 years, but if the Cold Case Squad busted some guy for the murder of some high school girls that occurred thirty years ago, it probably wouldn't raise anyone's hackles, except maybe the perp's.

There were members of the Natzi party that were not guilty of serious crime , lots of them . Even Officers in the military corps that were not worthy of prosicution , for a while there were some things that these people were not allowed to do , nd some of them were picked on by Allies more than was needed
but eventually things normalised and a lot of these people lived on with normal lives , one even becomeing the chairan f the U.N..

Communists were never eveyone , but there were a lot of them , it is probably necessacery to normalise them in society because they are too many to shun or exile permanantly.

In the 70's and 80's being a member of the SED (in East Germany) or the CPSU was much more about climbing the social ladder than it was any real belief in Marxism, Stalinism, Leninsm, etc.

The stagnant eastern economies of the gave way to things like Intershop, Delikat, and other special advantages to being a member of the party. Also, it was much easier to become a member than it was before (and less dangerous after Stalin died!). So yeah, I think many of the late comers to the Communist parties probably did have a myopic picture of the party and it mostly centered on them.

You are certainly not includeing the effect on terrorism that the War on terror under Bush has had in comparison to previous presidents?


A booming economy is better for the poor than any government program has any potential to be , restricting economic growth is harsh on the poor .
