It is likely that there is a lot of corruption in the Egyptian government, being as it is mostly a rerun of Mubarak's regime.
The Russians want three things from Syria: (1) the naval base the currently have, (2) a guarantee that no gas pipeline will be built from Qatar to the Mediterranean, which would compete with Russian gas to Europe, and (3) stability, so that Islamic terrorists will not be trained in Syria. Russia has a lot of Muslims, and they are as a group, not at all fond of Putin.
Th US really only wants stability in Syria, but a secondary goal is less collaboration with Hezbollah.
Lindsey Graham, who clearly knows better, claims that Obama has "lost" Syria to the Russians. This is nonsense: Russia and Syria have been allies since the first Assad regime. The US has never been any sort of ally to Syria, since Syria is Israel's worst enemy and The US is Israel's best buddy.
The Russians are unlikely to consider Assad staying in power as an absolute condition. They would surely trade him for anyone more stable that gave them their base and no pipeline guarantee.
