Go Kurds Go! (The partition of Iraq begins!)

First cargo of disputed Kurdish Iraqi oil delivered to Israel

DEBKAfile - June 20, 2014

The Liberia-flagged SCF Altai tanker docked at Ashkelon port early Friday and began unloading crude, according to a port source. This may be the first sale of oil by the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) through a new pipeline to the Turkish port of Ceyhan, which was built to bypass the Iraqi national pipeline. This trade is bitterly disputed by Baghdad, which has threatened legal action against buyers. Israel has not confirmed whether it is buying the oil for its own use or storing it for transfer to another destination.

DEBKAfile reports that Israel sympathizes with the KRG?s aspirations for greater autonomy and economic prosperity independent of Baghdad and is a willing helper.

Emboldened by its army?s takeover of the oil city of Kirkuk against the advancing ISIS forces, the Kurds plan to export this new source of oil through their own outlet, since the Kirkuk outlet was sabotaged. The transfer via Ceyan to Ashkelon was eased by the greatly improved relations between Ankara and Jerusalem in recent weeks.

Debkafiles knows it all.... except when it doesn't.

It's not like I care. I would be just as happy if there were three Iraqs or five Iraqs as one. Iraq was a pretty bad idea when the British invented it.

I question debkafiles as a valid source. As an agent of Israeli propaganda, this is a great story, true or not.

There is no Kurdistan for a reason: not all Kurds speak the same language, and political differences between different factions are huge.
Kurdish is an Indo-European language, descended from Sanscrit, and related to Farsi, but not easily understood by Farsi speakers. There are several dialects, but not all are mutually intelligible, there not being a lingua franca that serves the purpose of Koranic Arabic to people who claim to be Arabic speakers.

Kurdistan as a member of NATO?  It is neither Northern nor Atlantic.
It is a nation that not only does not touch the Atlantic Ocean, but is landlocked.

If a hypothetical Kurdistan existed, the US would be obliged to defend it against all aggressors.

Allowing it into NATO would be an act of major stupidity.

There are probably few Republicans that would agree to this. None that own maps, for sure.

Greece was admitted because of its major role in transatlantic shipping. Turkey was admitted because (1) the US did not wish to play favorites between the two, and (2) the US craved bases right on the borders of the USSR.

Kurdistan is  not strategic to US interests in any way, and no American should be obliged to give his life fighting for Kurdistan. A NATO treaty would do just that.

Note that Israel does have Mediterranean ports and is NOT a member of NATO.
