Sure, they gave the BS defence the Marines were hoping to get away with. DID get away with, in fact. What did it matter what excuse they gave? There IS no excuse for what they did and it was all a lie anyway. That didn't stop the U.S. military from "exonerating" them, which says a lot more about the military and the Bush administration that administers it than it does about the guilt or innocence of those Marines.
