Some people obviously feel a tremendous need to believe that some benign super-intelligent entity is in control of the Universe, but others do not, I among them. There may be a creator, there may be a vast system of physical laws that equate to a Supreme Being.

I see a need to know as much as we can know about the universe, even though we can never know more than a fraction about the rather tiny place we occupy within it.

Metaphysics originally meant "beyond physics", or, in a modern context, "beyond that which can be proven by reproducible experiments". In that sense, I believe that metaphysics is a valid subject.
