Ha! I got a good laugh out of that one. A whole social class of unemployed Americans... just like how the industrial revolution left everyone unemployed? Come on, Brass. Don't be ridiculous.

So, what are you saying?  Are you saying that robotics will be a new industrial revolution and the robotics industry will be a new jobs market like the IT boom of the 90's?

And what happens when we have robots that build the robots?

We can have a whole social class of unemployed Americans or we can do the right thing and move toward socialism.

So, you want capitalists to pay for the robots, then you want to take everything away from them when it's done?

No.

No.

So, where do capitalists fit into a socialist system?

At that point the principals of evolution will begin to apply to the robots ,and the time of the disobedient robot become inevitable.

So, what are you saying?

I'm saying a loss of old jobs does not mean no new ones will be created. Rather than ascribe to your rather twisted almost-luddism that assumes jobs will simply disappear therefore we need socialism, I happen to think new jobs will be created. It's always happened. The industrial revolution took jobs away from people, and yet people found new jobs to take the place of the old jobs. Computers were going to lead us all to a paperless society and tons of leisure time. Instead, rather than doing the same amount of work as before, more work is now done, taking advantage of the increased productivity that computers allow. Look at Information Technology. It has become a vital part of business, and IT did not even exist as recently as 60 years ago, less than the average lifespan of a person in this country. People and the market will adapt. New jobs will be found, that is what I'm saying.
Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.
--Hieronymus Karl Frederick Baron von Munchausen ("The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" [1988])--

When Robots can build robots , and can begin doing their jobs without supervision , perhaps robots can buy from other robots the fuel , spare parts and programming that the robots need.

When the robots have replace human beings as consumors , will they need us for anything ?

forgive me brass
But wordplay really is a factor here.
robot in most instance is here will not be used to replace human labor
machines will take over that areas
a robot is much too costly a device  to do such speacilized task.
unless my definition of a robot is different than yours.
I think of robot as multporpuse machine able to do various task (some beyond human)

The same place they fit into the one we're in now.

As owners of production?

I thought in a socialist state, there were no individual owners?

just a thought
I think were not gonna be taken over by robots
instead we`ll become something similiar to borg
nanites are not actually machines ,but actually modified bacteria
and we always had the trend to improve ourselves.
is it unlikely we`ll incorporate machines to ourselves to this extreme?

Very likely, actually.

truthfully
I wouldn`t mind a cortal implant to increase data capacity and organizing all that information.
and be able to surf the net with out a extranal device.
the only thing I haven`t decided is, do I want a AI with my implant or not?
I remember a old marvel charater having one
deathlok

I remember Deathlok, my own self.

I agree that an implant or some kind of connection for input would be nice a la Matrix knowledge downloads.

thinking about it
teenagers are kinda hooked to thier cells
how much of a strecht would it be for them tied to the borg collective
cellphone implants with the option to continuesly talk to each other
I kinda doubt the kids would be putoff with the idea
myspace may merge with cell companies in the near future and offer such things

resistance is futile

you will be assimulated
