Planning my trip from Detroit to Amman, I found that the cheapest way to go was through multiple carriers. And what a way to go! Schipol Airport offers tours of Amsterdam and "Dutch Tulip Tours" for lengthy layovers and Charles de Gaulle Airport offers "Le Petit Tour" of Paris for lengthy layovers.

Paris and Amsterdam. That is so not fair. I mean, not fair that I can't go.
-
Sounds like fun, Henny! And at Christmas time!

Sounds way cool Henny, hopefully you'll get the chance to visit Petra, if you haven't already. Never been there myself, but I look forward to an extended vacation in the Middle East at some point in my life.
My sister recently married a Lebanese Christian (Greek Orthodox) who has offered to let me stay with his family in Tyre for as long as I'd like.

Hi Fatman! Indeed, I have been to Petra a few times. This is a vacation to visit family; my sightseeing will be briefly in Amsterdam and Paris. :-)

Have a nice trip.
Is it possible to bring French cheese into Jordan? If so, that's what I would do.

Absolutely! Jordan doesn't have very stringent guidelines on bringing food, plants, etc., into the country.

I find the US ban on cheese to be absurd and in poor taste as well.
I can see why we might ban smuggling Velveeta or Cheez-Whiz OUT of the US, but we need more Gruyere, Camembert and Port-Salut in the US, not less.
If you ask the cheese store owner what to buy and when to eat it and with what, you will probably be delighted.

There's a ban on cheese in the US? Wonder if the store down the road (that sells all kind of imported cheese, including a number from France) knows that?
-
There is not a ban on French cheese.
There IS a ban on you importing your own cheese.
It is not allowed for you to bring cheese into the US on your own.
It sounds stupid, but this is a fact.

Dairy items such as milk, yogurt, butter are generally admissible, although this is subject to change, depending on disease outbreaks. Eggs may be admissible, although frequent outbreaks of Exotic Newcastles Disease and avian flu make it very likely that they will be denied entry. Hard cured cheese such as parmesan or cheddar are generally admissible, soft cheeses such as brie and soft curd cheese and cheese in water(ricotta, feta, etc.) are not.

Look, it's like this: no matter what the Hell the regulations say, when the plane is about to touch down, they ask if anyone has cheese or fruit. If you say you do, they take it away from you and they throw it away. Just imagine what would happen on an airliner if you demanded it back. The Fascist HSA would have you scrunched down with your face on the carpet and their knees in your back and your name would go on the "never allow on a plane again" list.
They do not read any crap about "generally admissible". They just take the cheese and never give it back. And you had better not complain. Dissent is not allowed on any plane.

Last time I traveled internationally, customs inspections were not done on the plane.

I've never flown with cheese, but in my experience, on planes coming into the U.S. each passenger is given a Customs Declaration form. You fill it out on the plane and then present it when you go through customs. Most times they take your word for it when they check your form, but occasionally they do random searches (and of course others based on legitimate suspicion).
When I go through this upcoming time, I will deliberately attempt to bring some French cheese into the U.S. (declared). I'll let you know how I fair, and if I get through I'll send you some via overnight delivery. :)
