What sort of moron gives a gun to a kindergartner?

A pop gun maybe, but not a real firearm. That is insane.

Please state the age at which all persons should be given a first firearm.

I was about 8 when my Uncle Gus died.
After he retired he opened a gunsmith shop.
He built/crafted some beautiful guns.....OMG the wood stocks!
When he died my aunt told me that Gus left my brother & I each a gun he had built.
Of course at 8 years old I was really excited...
But my parents told me I could not take full ownership until I was older.
My gun....my dear uncle made for me...was locked away in the gun safe.
So my Dad, my older brother, and I would once or twice year go to the gun range.
I would mainly just observe and listen to the safety instructions.
I was probably about 11 before they carefully allowed me to shoot the gun at the range.
I think I fired it about 5 times that day.
The certified instructor was there with us and it is a moment I will never forget.

Never.

People who want guns should at least buy the damned things for themselves.

Do you think giving a handgun to a kindergartner is a good idea?  I sure don't.

Now that is just silly. People should learn a lot about responsibility before they are old enough to hold down a job.

I was 9 when I was given a rifle , but this was after some preparation , including being observed with a BB gun.

The right age is the age at which the responsibility can be fully understood, for a few this might be never but for most of us the growth of sensibility and responsibility is a parental project and the bestowing of responsibility for a child is a parental responsibility.

Deciding when to entrust is too important to make the decision automatic at any age.

But all other things being equal , isn't early better than late?

You assume that everyone should have a gun. I don't

I can shoot a gun, I had a BB gun, I used to shoot rats with a borrowed pistol when I lived in a very boring small town in Washington state. But I do not think that a kindergartner has any business owning a gun. Not a nine year old, either.

People that want guns should buy their own guns.
Kids who want to drive should help pay for their own cars as well.

You're a mr literal nut-job....lol
things are not always going to fit into your "assume the worst" conclusions.

i had a friend that inherited his first car...a 1965 Mustang when he was about 11 years old.

OMG......giving a car to an 11 year old.....OMG HEAVEN FORBID!

Uh....no...

His older brother died in Viet Nam....
His brother had the coolest 1965 Mustang ever...well we thought so.

So his parents kept it their garage until Stephen was old enough to drive
as kids we would pretend we were older...dream about when we could really take it out for a spin...
In the summer...we sometimes would sit in that Mustang in the driveway or garage
Oh man those leather seats, play with the steering wheel, we were in hog heaven
honk the horn until his Dad hollered "knock it off"
his Dad would pull it out and wash it in the driveway
of course we were right there "helping" polish those wheels
we were driving along the "street of dreams".

and there wasn't a damn thing wrong with boys dreamin
or Stephen getting his first car at 11

No, its not an assumption that everyone "should". (While it is a smart idea, some people, perhaps yourself included, should have no business, carrying a firearm.  Just too much responsibility for some.)

What it is however is a position that everyone have the right, barring any criminal or mental record, to carry and handle a firearm

And Children as young as 7, can and should be taught proper respect and responsibility that handling a firearm requires.  NOT as some mandatory class (I can just imagine the leap the professor was going to take that last comment of mine), but if the parent so chooses to teach their child in the ways of handing a firearm

So then, you have no problem with kids who help pay for their own firearm as well, correct?

Yeah, when Junior drives the 'Stang through the garage wall, or shoots his young self, maybe the utter stupidity of your inane post will become obvious.

Speaking of inane...that made no sense    :o    Parents buy, and help buy things for kids, that they may not be ready to use, or participate in, all the time.  It's up to the parent, not you or the Government to decide when its safe/appropriate to start educating that child in how to use....whatever.  It's also up to the parent to take the proper steps in educating their child in whatever it is they're getting for the child.

That doesn't equate to literally letting them run around the kitchen with a loaded firearm at age 3, or letting them drive to the mall at age 4    ::)

But that doesn't stop them from helping to purchase something for them.  Under your inane post, parents who start college funds, even before a child is born, apparently are stupid

Did I propose a law or something?

No, I did not.

I simply said that no kindergartner should be given a gun.

No 11 years old should be given a car, either.

It is like saying that no sane person should drink Drano or spray oven cleaner on their face.

No, I did not.

Who claimed you did??  And even if you had, I suppose I could pull the old Professor literal card and proclaim how you're in no position to propose or pass anything   :o

I simply said that no kindergartner should be given a gun.

And who the hell proclaims that kindergarteners should be allowed to walk around packing a firearm??

It's one thing to purchase a gift for a kindergartner, with the expectation of teaching them how to properly use the item as they grow and mature.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.  It's quite another to infer that the notion here is to allow kindergarten-aged Brad Pitts to run around the house with a loaded pistol.  That'd be again argueing a point, no one is making

No 11 years old should be given a car, either.

It's done all the time.  A co-woker right here has already told her recently teened daughter their intention of giving them their old car, as soon as they purchase a new one this year.  And when the teen is old enough to start driving, whalaa, car is already there

I remember it was a big deal to me the first knife I was allowed to have.

There were rules to learn, there was a minimum of behavior to maintain and I could have lost the privilege with any sort of misuse.

I think I owned a rifle at an earlier age than my father mostly because my father was more prosperous than my grandfather.

I never gave a firearm to my children, I lived in town and the things are much easier to manage if most of your neighbors are out of range.

It is between my fathers lifetime and mine that our country is converting to an urban centered culture from a majority rural population.

This is just one of the many things that are hard to change , but impossible to have the same.
