Obama In Paris: "Mass Shootings Don't Happen In Other Countries"

In response to a question about the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado, President Obama went back to a familiar talking point, claiming mass shootings are unique to America.

"I say this every time we have one of these mass shootings. This just doesn't happen in other countries," he said during a press conference in Paris today.

The only problem with his answer was that he was standing in Paris, where a mass shooting conducted by Islamic State terrorists had just taken place, killing over 100 people.

Obama followed up his statement acknowledging that America was "rightly determined to prevent terrorist attacks wherever they occur" but seemed to separate the two events in his mind.

He argued that since the United States was determined to fight terrorism, it was important for Americans to demand more gun control as well.

"We devote enormous resources, and properly so, to rooting out networks and debilitating organizations like ISIL and maintaining the intelligence and improving the information sharing that can identify those who would try to kill innocent people," he said. "And yet, in the United States, we have the power to do more to prevent what is just a regular process of gun homicides."

He urged Congress and State and local governments to make changes on gun laws to prevent people who were "deranged" or had "violent tendencies" from killing in the United States.

There is no problem. Mass shootings in Paris are very rare.
In the US they are biweekly events.

Most notably in desginated "gun free zones", and regions with the strictest gun restrictions/control.  Imagine that

It happens because idiots can buy guns. In France, it takes major effort to buy them. Any nut can sage his own personal gun nut massacre. No international terrorist organization support is needed.

No, it happens because those who want to kill will acquire guns one way or another, and find the nearest "gun free" zone to inflict the most amount of carnage

You can't do anything "extensive", as it relates to "vetting" on a syrian refuge that has no background, outside of word of mouth by some fellow "friends".  That's simply the reality of the situation.  Nothing being made up there, at all.

While legal Americans have to go thru a battery of background checking to simply exercise what is a fundamental right of every legal American, in this country

So what is it that you think that the State Dept. does for two years as it investigates refugees?
If they had access to Syrian police records, do you imagine that they would reveal it?

Well, while Clinton was in office, they largely rubber stamped whatever foreign diplomat asked for, after donating large sums to her foundation.  As it relates to refugees, they largely can't do squat, as it relates to vetting, as there's nothing to vett

There have not been 355 people killed by gun violence in mass killings in France or any other country that is not in some sort of war.

It is supposed to mean exactly as it sounds like.

The French are less likely to be shot by gun nuts than Americans. Especially those who do not live in Paris. If you live in Marseilles, Lyon, Dijon, Bordeaux, Nice, Pau or Nancy, you can feel really safe.

And.................?  The French also have less freedoms than Americans.  I'll take freedom over "security" every day of the week, and twice on weekends

And here's the irony of your statement.  Using your analogy, here in America, those who do not live in the heart of nearly every one of our urban centers, the less likely they are to be shot as well.  Especially those cities with far stricter gun regulations, applied to the legal gun owner

The French also have less freedoms than Americans.

NOT TRUE!

The US is ranked 21st, France 17th. New Zealand is the most free country with regard tp personal freedoms.
