If Barack Obama inspired you so much that after voting for him you now want to work for him, there are thousands of jobs to be had in the new administration.

There are coveted presidential appointments and a huge array of staff positions. But you have to start the ball rolling right now, especially if you weren’t an integral part of the presidential campaign.

You can head over to the newly minted Web site for the Obama transition team and fill out an application for a job right on the site. But like traditional job sites, this strategy probably won’t get you very far. Getting a job with the new administration is pretty much like getting any job: It’s all about connections.

Funny; I naively thought that obtaining a Federal Government job (Civil Service not appointee) centers around hiring the most capable applicant. Is hiring at the the Base you work at done via hiring the most capable or "by connections"?

There are two types of jobs in any administration: civil service jobs, and political appointments. Civil Service jobs are generally awarded on merit, though letters of recommendation are accepted and considered.  Political appointments are general awarded first by requiring some sort of campaign experience or at least loyalty to the candidate, and then merit within that group. No president, vp or senator wants a partisan of an opposing party on his/her staff. Who would?

Merit. That is why Juniorbush had so much trouble when Gonzalez fired a bunch of judges for not being sufficiently pro-Republican.

So, when Obama pledges to nominate Judges not based so much on merit, but by how much empathy they have for minorities, in other words, pro-Democrat, he's pulling a Bush, obviously.  Which apparently obligates the opposition to kick, scream, and proclaim, "hell no".

Gotcha

He fired judges? I thought he fired attorneys.

They were part of the judicial system and were supposed to be chosen on merit, not party affiliation.

Clinton fired all of 'em and selected ones based on party affiliation. So, when Bush (via Gonzales) fired SOME of them and replaced them with others, he was just restoring balance.

There has been a lot done to prevent nepotism.

There is still a lot of needing to know the right people.

It is mixed , merit counts a lot and so does haveing connection.
