U.S. general warns Ebola Could cross U.S. southern border

The military's top official responsible for Latin America says he's concerned illegal immigrants from West Africa could already be sneaking across the porous southern border carrying Ebola, adding a new potential danger the White House will have to grapple with.

Already, lawmakers on Capitol Hill have panned President Obama's new proposal to start taking the temperature of passengers arriving from West Africa at five U.S. airports.

The bipartisan group of congressmen told Mr. Obama to issue a full-blown travel ban prohibiting citizens of affected countries from entering the U.S., and imposing a quarantine on any travelers who arrive from West Africa.

But legal channels may not be the only vulnerability. Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly, commander of U.S. Southern Command, said he was in Costa Rica last week and encountered an embassy employee who?d run across a handful of Liberian men preparing to be smuggled into the U.S. as illegal immigrants.

"Anything can ride on the network," Gen. Kelly said this week at the National Defense University in Washington.

He said the danger is two-fold: Not only might illegal immigrants from Africa enter the U.S. unchecked, but if Ebola spreads to Central America it could spark a new wave of illegal immigration to the U.S. that would make this summer's surge "look like a small problem."

The American border with Mexico is not an open border. That is just nonsense.

Neither can the border be sealed.

Ebola is not likely to become a danger  on the US Mexico border. There is no trade and there are no direct flights from Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone to any country in Central America or Mexico.

Perhaps it is a good idea to be prepared, but this is no reason to panic.

    This is not likely to happen by accident , Ebola debilitates its victim too rapidly .

     But maliciously , yea that could happen.

No one in history has ever spread a naturally occurring disease maliciously as an act of war. It is even harder to administer than poison gas.

There are reasons the US gave up on germicidal warfare, and it was not entirely for humanitarian reasons.

We once had an Airforce Colonel on out faculty, and he was more paranoid than sane. He was sure that Saddam was going to attack the mainland US with weaponized smallpox and anthrax, sarin gas, and dirty bombs. They apparently teach courses in Intensive paranoia in the War College classes Curtis LeMay was this guy's hero.

   It was Nixon who halted our Bio warfare program, entirely for humanitarian reasons.

    Bio-warfare does have risks and drawbacks unique to the type , but not so much that they could not be deployed , when successful they are a cheaper way to kill lots of enemy.

They apparently teach courses in Intensive paranoia in the War College classes Curtis LeMay was this guy's hero.

Curtis Lemay should be every Americans Hero, no telling how long WWII would have been without Harris and LeMay.

   I have been to the Navy version of that school. It was called NBC defense when I went there. It is really frightening stuff, it can be coped with, but the collateral damage potential is huge. This is not a consideration for enemies that do not have a humanitarian scruple.

    The Soviet Union for example brewed up tons of bio weapons and came up with interesting means of delivery. On the small scale they had a BBgun disguised as an umbrella that was used by assassins to deliver tiny doses of powerful toxins.  On the large scale they had stockpiles of toxic and bio weapons many times the stockpiles of ours that our forces took twenty years to safely destroy.

     Don't feel safe just because it would be difficult for terrorists to do , terrorists are just as clever as we are, and in recent times have become pretty well financed.

     Also nature delivers a bio terror surprise every few years just because pathogens are still having evolution.
     Good preparation for bio attack and good preparation against natural plague would be pretty much the same preparation.

LeMay wanted to start WWIII. He was the military equivalent of the One Note Samba. One dangerous C*cksucker.

  I bet you had forgotten it was him.

  Nixon was a competent president , which cannot be said for the majority of presidents.

  The disgrace was deserved , but presidents have skated over thinner ice and escaped better deserved disgrace.

   At least he should be remembered as a peacemaker , which very few national leaders at all deserve as an appellation.
