Why is a man taking a moment of prayer noteworthy?
Is it so unusual?
-
I fail to see why anyone would vote for some stupid politician because of anything some ball player does or does not do.
Perry is an unqualified goober, and why some guy does with a ball is at best entertaining for people who consider people playing with balls entertaining to watch.
-
I didn't know Govener Perry was involved with Tim Tebow.
What is the connection?
-
Perry compared him to Tebow, who apparently is famous for coming back from slumps to play better football. I suppose that Perry thinks that he, like Tebow, will soon come out of what he perceives to a slump and improve his chances in the primaries.
Unlikely, because Perry is a dimwitted opportunistic goober. He is more entertaining to watch than football for me, because I do not have to sit through three hours of tedious commercials and inane sports commentary for something amusing to happen. Perry opens his mouth, puts both feet in, and is instantly amusing. He is more of a Shemp, Moe or Larry than a Tebow.
-
My Favoriate has dropped out of the presidential race.
Now I need to pick another.
Perry likes Tebow eh?
-
Perry like Tebow is hoping to overcome low expectations. Again the praying doesn't have much to do with it.In Flacos case Tebow is getting more sports wrap air time than the Ravens and that pisses Flaco off.
-
the prayewr is very important because teenagers have sacrifice thier education for the cause.
well they didn`t know till it was too late.
-
What if instead of thanking his Laaaaawd and Saviour Jesus Christ every time he was interviewed, he rolled out a prayer rug, and thanked Muhammad, praise be? How tolerant would the NFL, and TV networks, be of that?
BSB
-
We'll never know, seeing as how he isn't of that persuasion.
-
It is pretty clear that an Allah-praising Muslim would not get the same sort of attention as a Thankyew Lawd Jesus type. Still, I imagine he might have more fans than a devout Muslim NASCAR driver. Imagine a stock car painted with stars and crescents and Arabic script.
-
It is pretty clear that an Allah-praising Muslim would not get the same sort of attention as a Thankyew Lawd Jesus type.
Complete nonsense. The majority of the attention Tebow is getting is because he has led the team to 7 come from behind victories.
Same attention the ST Louis Cardinals got this baseball season or the Red Sox did the year they went all the way.
Those who keep bringing up his Public Displays of Affection for Jesus are the same type who complain about Christmas music in department stores.
Not much can make those folks happy. Other than to just let them whine.
If a muslim wants to thank allah after a touchdown pass that's fine with me, as long as they do it on the sidelines like Tebow does and doesn't cost his team a penalty.
-
I don't care what Tebow does on the sideline, in the end zone, in the locker room, at the carhop, wherever, I just don't like him thanking Jesus every time he gets in front of a TV camera. Not even the Dali Lama walks around thanking the Buddha.
Tebow, come-on-man, give it a rest.

I am glad he has this freedom.
-
I am not annoyed by Christmas music in department stores, but I am mildly annoyed by people publicly thanking Jesus. I would not want anyone trying to ban it, just like I would not want to ban farting and belching and other forms of inappropriate behavior. I tend to think that God really doesn't give a hoot who wins a sporting event or gets an Oscar. Probably some people do this out of habit and others because they know that they will a tongue lashing from a parent or relative if they do not do it. Perhaps God's eye is on the sparrow, but perhaps not on the Falcons, Hawks, Eagles or Jack Sparrow. (Not that I would expect Johnny Depp to thank Jeezus).
I am grateful that those horrid twittering Christmas ornaments have vanished.

Muhammad Ali for well over a decade during his heyday always gave thanks to "Allah"
after his fights and the networks even back then were "tolerant".
Watch video below to see Ali talks about Islam at the 42 second mark, again at the 58 second mark, and again at 2:36 mark:

Boxing is not like football. In football, people root for one team to WIN.
In boxing, like wrestling, people watch at least as often to watch some uppity Negro get clobbered.
Up to the championship fight, promoters try to get fights between members of different ethnic groups to slug it out so that people will see the match as a sort of mini race war in which they have someone to hate.
In pro wrestling, the contenders pick at the start of their careers whether they are going to be a good guy or a villain. The villains pick an identity, such as a Russian, a Muslim, an Afghan, that people will mostly despise.
Ali knew that as a boxer, attendance and receipts from his fights would be based more on how many people wanted to see him get clobbered.
Football and other team sports really does not work like this. Most people have allegiance for their home team, even though there may not be a single hometown guy in the lineup.
Maybe someone ought to try this in NASCAR. A green car with the Saudi Flag all over it with a horn that honks the Muslim call
to prayer. I know that I would not insure the driver, but maybe someone in Dubai would.
Again, I find professions of faith for victories in sports a bit silly. It is equally silly for boxers and wrestlers, of course, but at least it serves to raise the income of the contender, I doubt that it gets more people to root for Tebow's team in the same proportions
-

What the frell?? Can you get any more racist than that, Xo??

-
I am simply commenting on what fight promoters have been doing for the past 80 years or more, ever since the days of Jack Johnson. they feed on racism, I was commenting on how they and their audience perceive these fights from their prospective.
Of course, rightwingers can never put themselves in anyone elses' shoes. I forgot that part.
-
No, you made no reference to what promoters try to do. You made it crystal clear its merely what people do...."In boxing, like wrestling, people watch at least as often to watch some uppity Negro get clobbered".....no reference to promotors, in any, not that it would make much of a difference either. Boxing is just like football, though also akin to autoracing....you go to root, and ususally keep an eye out for who might get hurt.....REGARDLESS of race
-
Boxing for the longest time didn't have anything but black heavyweights who were worth a damn. Sure you had your occasional Tommy Morrison or Randall Cobb but before the Russians got in the game there weren't a whole lot of Great White Hopes.
-
Xo's point fits better in the movies than in real boxing.
I never did get Rocky Balboa, maybe there should be four or five more of them untill Rocky proves that geriatric inner city white guys can win boxing championships if they really really have heart.
In real boxing you have to be so skilled and tough to be the champion that color isn't going to be enough.
-
I think it is totally inevitable that a Muslim with strong athletic gifts will appear in the NFL, and I wouldn't be surprised if he prayed in a Muslim manner several times per game.
It is even possible that a Shikh might star in a football team and need a giant helment to contain his hair.
I wonder if any Athiest could make it to the big show and hit home runs or kick feild goals or put a puck in a net and celebrate in a very nillist manner?
-
Patriots crucify Jesus, I mean Tebow, 41 to 23. Will they go to hell?
BSB
P.S. Howard Cosell tolerated Ali's Islamic antics because interviewing Ali made Cosell famous. However, even with that benefit, Cosell invariably made a caustic comment about it, such as, "ok, now that that's out of the way, can we talk now?".
Further, Ali was pre 9/11. Now we have Americans who like to talk about Islamonazies, "the religion of peace", and the like. Very different atmosphere.
-
Patriots crucify Jesus, I mean Tebow, 41 to 23. Will they go to hell?
Who?
-
"Who?"
You know, that tean that has won 3 rings, that team that came within a minute of going 19 and 0 and a 4th ring, all in the past 10 years.
BSB
While the storm clouds gather far across
the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a team that's free
Let us all be grateful for a team so fair
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.
God bless the Patriots
Team that I love
Stand behind them and guide them
Thru the night with a light from above
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless the Patriots, my team sweet team.
-
Why would the Patriots go to hell for winning a football game?
-
In real boxing you have to be so skilled and tough to be the champion that color isn't going to be enough.
I agree that boxing requires a lot of stamina and toughness and training. I find it revolting to watch, unlike other sports, which only bore me. Except for curling, which I find amusing on occasion, and shown too rarely here in Miami to bore me.
I assume that the matches they have for lighter weight fighters are typical of those in other parts of the country. They always seem to pair up a Latino and a Black, or an occasional White guy vs. a Latino or a Black guy, or at least guys of different nationalities. I suppose that is to bring more spectators.
I remember hearing dozens of bigots saying that they could not wait for someone to "murder" the draft-doging "Black sumbitch Cassius Clay or whatever his name is" when he was fighting. They were rooting for anyone that fought him, even another Black guy, which was almost always the case.
-

You mean those lame ass cheating Patriots that were fined heavily and forfeited
a high draft choice for taping the sideline signals of opponents in violation of NFL rules.

Ho hum.
I could care less what grown men do with a ball that can't even bounce straight.
-
"In boxing, like wrestling, people watch at least as often to watch some uppity Negro get clobbered"
-
Yes, that is what I said. That is from the perspective of the spectator wishing to see the clobbering. All boxing spectators come with the express purpose of seeing someone clobbered. In the case of spectators who thought of Ali as an uppity Negro, tyhat was precisely the thought that was on their mind, as perceived by me.
I am capable of seeing things from the perspective of others.
If you do not like it, just shove it sirs, your phony outrage is disgusting.
-
Except for curling, which I find amusing on occasion, and shown too rarely here in Miami to bore me.
Curling is a great game, which I only recently learned to appreciate. Pretty much every crappy little town in Minnesota has a curling team. There is a lot of planning and strategy in the game; I've heard it described as "slow motion chess on ice". ;-)
-
Yes, that is what I said. That is from the perspective of the spectator wishing to see the clobbering. All boxing spectators come with the express purpose of seeing someone clobbered.
Yea, but you went above and beyond, apparently not only a representative of the black man, now you're a representaive of pretty much every boxing spectator, who goes, NOT to root for one person over another, like in football, but to "watch some uppity Negro get clobbered"
Can't get too much more racist than that
In the case of spectators who thought of Ali as an uppity Negro, tyhat was precisely the thought that was on their mind, as perceived by me.
Boy the things I could conclude about you as "perceived by me". Would that make them accurate, then??
-
Hardly, your mind is warped, stuffed with false information and your reasoning is defective.
I suppose you are going to tell me that there were not a lot of racists who wanted to see Ali clobbered. Ali deliberately provoked them just to get them to buy tickets and increase the gate.
-
Hardly, your mind is warped, stuffed with false information and your reasoning is defective.
And yet again, the irony of such a proclaimation. Were you looking at a reflection in your monitor, as you uttered those non-substantive, 3rd grade insults?
I suppose you are going to tell me that there were not a lot of racists who wanted to see Ali clobbered.
"A lot"?? Define "a lot", as that is a vague as one can get. Folks that went?, all those folks that watched TV?, folks that just hated blacks?? There were likely racists that wanted to see Ali and other blacks "get clobbered". But that's kind of a given, for a racist. You went above and beyond painting spectators in general as wanting to "watch some uppity Negro get clobbered". That's why they supposedly went, according to you and your unsubstantiated perceptions
I guess we can classify those perceptions as "hardly accurate" as well
-
I seems pretty clear to me that there were a LOT of White people that wanted to see Ali get clobbered. I was there, I heard this desire expressed many times. I did not take a count, however. And as a rule, they did not describe Ali as an "uppity Negro". The word 'Negro', by the way, was in common usage by everyone in those days.
-
As I said, I guess we can classify those perceptions as "hardly accurate" as well, since I've seen plenty of white people that wanted to see Tommy Morrison "get clobbered". Not to mention, who of those "white folks" were wanting to see Ali get clobbered, simply because he was black, and not because of a bet they may have had on his opponent, or were merely rooting for his opponent??
Who was his opponent?
-

Who was his opponent?
================================
As I recall, most of his opponents were other Black boxers. But they were less uppity, or "knew their place", according to those who wanted to see Ali clobbered. \
\
Boxing is one sport that seems guaranteed to make those who practice it inarticulate. I feel sorry for Ali, who can barely speak intelligibly, as a result of getting so many concussions in all those fights. Football players seem to have a similar problem. It seems foolish to destroy athletes (or anyone) for idle amusement and something to bet on. Gamblers could bet on jumping frogs or cockroaches or flip coins, after all.
-
IIRC it's Parkinsons that makes his speech so unintelligible & his movements so impaired, and has prescious little to do with the clobbering he took, and those who "watched that uppity Negro get clobbered"
-
SIRS....my favorite boxers were all black.
Ali, Larry Holmes, and Roy Jones Jr
I remember being nervous as a cat when Holmes fought Gerry Cooney.
I suppose there are white and black racists that may cheer against
another race out of hatred, but I also think sometimes people can
cheer for their own race not so much out of racism but because
they can on some levels relate to their own race better & maybe
even have some kind of vision of "that could be me".
-
SIRS....my favorite boxers were all black.
Well, that definately makes you a racist.....at least in the left's eyes. Because of course, you're hiding your inheirent racism and stealth advocation of racist policies by showcasing your support of some "black men". Wasn't that was support for Cain all about? The Tea party? Now come on....fess up ;)
...I also think sometimes people can cheer for their own race not so much out of racism but becausethey can on some levels relate to their own race better & maybe even have some kind of vision of "that could be be me".
See? You're proving Xo's point. Racist ;)
-
Jack Johnson had a lot more of this trouble than Mohammed Ali ever did , but it would be wrong to call it absent or unimportant.
Didn't Ali get a lot of love ?

Their jobs are quite simular, I wonder what they talk about.
Maybe they avoid talking about work.

What could possibly be so boring as 2000 years of bogus announcements that Jesus will pop in at any moment and bring the End of Time?
