Admissions officers say the problem is that low-income students don't understand how little the university charges them, so they don't apply. Scott, for instance, has had to pay roughly $2,500 a year, which he did by working and taking out a small loan. The university covered the remaining $44,700.
----------------
uhm
the $2,500 is still alot of money to low-income students
note that scott had to take -out a loan .
I`m not saying stanford is not doing a great thing.
but it`s not like good will hunting where if your smart enough you can go to any school .
it`s abit more tougher than that
-
"We struggled to get there and once we got there, it was a culture shock," said one of Scott's friends, Tanya Koshy, a recent Stanford graduate. "Once you get over the initial shock and accept the fact that you're different and come from a different background, you can propel yourself forward and nothing can hold you back."
That's the point.
Being born poor is one thing, remaining poor is quite another.
-
$2,500 a year ...
I wish ...
-
$2,500 is quite good for us people with decent jobs.
but these kids are from families whose income is much below that.
the chances are just slim enough to crush thier spirit to ever believe they would get to stanford.
the point is not that these people are making themselves poor.
it`s that they don`t know thay have a chance to go much farther than they thought.
ex. I have some extremely intelligent kids in my family, but I would never of thought of encouraging them to go to a college like stanford.
I have absolutely no doubt they can get in.
but the money aspect make it a instant don`t bother
but after this article I`m going to think different about it.
that article only talked about tuition.
I still don`t know about the other expenses
is the material cost(books, etc.) manageable or high?
-
I'm sorry, but $2,500 a year is nothing.
Get a job.
-
kimba i know college kids that easily make a hundred
dollars a night waiting tables a few nights a week
unless someone is disabled, putting together well
over $2500 either with part time jobs or working
during the summer is really not out of reach.
if someone can't scrape together $2500 it
could be a sign that they shouldn't be there
in the first place.
-
in the article the kid did work part-time and still had to get a loan to cover it
also the math is all wrong .
raising $2,500 on part-time work is not the problem
raising $2,500 and supporting himself on part-time is the trick.
and he had live in his car for awhile.
I personally can easily scrap that money in much less than a year but I work full time and don`t go to school
-
It's called delayed gratification.
I suspect that attitude is old school nowadays.
-
it is a out dated notion.
why save money to buy something when you can charge it and pay for it later and if you still don`t have the money just don`t pay it .
but on matter for the poor getting to a high end college it`s a different matter.
these schools are simply not thought of as available.
it`s a unintentional economic class situation.
even 4less govt said the poor don`t deserve a high end education
-
even 4less govt said the poor don`t deserve a high end education
That isn't what he said.
He said that if they can't scrape together $2,500, then it might be a sign they shouldn't be there. That is a comment on the willingness to work to get an education, not saying "if they're poor they shouldn't go to a good school."
-
but that`s the rub it assumed the person is not willing if him or her can`t get the money together.
to us $2,500 is not alot of money but for other it`s huge.
remember one of the factors to get a low tuition is the inability to earn a decent income.

My daughter made $2,500 last year (in about 4 months) working part time as a waitress. No skills or education required. They don't even require reading and writing anymore - the ticket she filled out for the food orders had little pictures of everything on it, just check off the items that were ordered.
-
how on earth did she do that
at $500+ for rent and ultilities at least $100
and I got no idea what her food expense is
on part-time that`s quite a acheivement
I hope you don`t think this is common.
-
"even 4less govt said the poor don`t deserve a high end education"
::)
kimba can you show where I said what you claim i did?
please show me the exact words where anything even close to that was said?
your interpretation of my words is a bunch of baloney
i believe education is a key component of a rising tide
if they have a degree they probably wont rob you leaving the 7/11 at 2am!
education prevents crime
there are limited seats at Stanford
if some students will work part time and raise the $2500 needed
then they get to go
if someone has ten kids (whose fault is that?) and cant raise the $2500
then they may have to attend other schools that are readily available
all i said is if someone that is not disabled can't show enough motivation to raise $2500
then it could be a sign they don't belong there
$2500 is really not much money to raise
you can wait tables on weekends and nights
you can paint address numbers on curbs
you can print flyers and clean people's homes
everything cant be handed to you on a silver plate

==============================================================
Most people can't get a job that pays $100 a night, nor do most waiter jobs pay that much other than on weekends.
If you think this is easy, I suggest you try it.

My daughter would routinely come home with $100 in tips a night when she was a waitress at Steak and Shake.
Perhaps it is more a function of how polite she was to her customers than your personal experience?

________________________________________
that`s $200 aweek
rounded off to $850/month
$500+100+25=$625
so It`ll be 225 month maximun
i say this because I didn`t factor tax and the high cost of being in california
so food will be higher and rent will cost more

The qoute is
if someone can't scrape together $2500 it
could be a sign that they shouldn't be there
in the first place.
doesn`t mean the poor which is usually people who can`t scrape $2500

$100 anight in tips!!
that`s actually very good.
-

I know several people that wait tables and they make $80-$100 every night
sometimes more on weekends. People may need to get a personality when
they are working as a waitor. Give excellent service! Work their ass off
to please people. Too many people have the shitty attitude and
cant suck it up and work with pride. It shows in their tips. No
people aren't tight, you(not you XO) just dont give a damn and it shows.
Look in the mirror! When I was a dishwasher making
$1.80 an hour I was the best freaking dishwaher at the restaurant.
I didn't stand around whining "this sucks". My next job was a mailroom,
I took pride and tried to be the best. I challenged myself to get more
stuff boxed with postage than anyone else. I painted address numbers
on curbs back in 1979, and easily made $100 a day. Freakin 1979
a teenager making $100 a day. $2500 in 2008? ::)
If your on the clock take pride in whatever it is your doing.
In most cases excellence will take of everything else.
If you think this is easy, I suggest you try it.
That the problem EXACTLY!
You liberals think things should be "easy".
It is relatively easy to make $2500 in a short time working a 2nd job.
But no work is not "easy", thats why they call it work.
If a student wants to go to Stanford and it requires they pay a tiny fraction of $2500
then if they are not disabled, they need to get off their ass and get to work!
get a second job
i know a guy that works 3 jobs
whatever it takes.
-
I did 3 three job
I can`t get a decent grade to save my life
when I got it down to one my grades finally went up
unlike some people I actually get tired from working alot.
and I`m a conservative who doesn`t believe in magic.

well you may have to work fulltime and attend classes at night
and stretch out you education more than 4 years.

work makes you tired
thats why they call it work

At least you acknowledge that
It seems like people don`t know what hard work is.
people act like sleep is a sign of lazyness
one of the dumbest expression I hear as a kid is yawning means you got too much energy, you need to work some more.
strangely I hear this from europeans mostly.
-
kimba,
if you don't mind me asking
primarily what is your area of study?
-
veterinary medicine.
the only thing I remember now is how capture a rabid dog with my shoelaces
and handle a dew claw remover
I hated fecal analysis
tv shows make medicine glamorous
-
Ok Kimba thank you for sharing.
I have heard that is a very difficult curriculum.
Best of luck with your studies.
-
NO NO NO No
I gave it up years ago
if i ever go back to school ,it`ll be in accounting
talking with the folks here has peaked my math interest big time and I might go into that field.
I love doing math alot more than taking a cat`s temp.
