Funny, I haven't found anything that doesn't work on Vista.

which version do you have?

I have home basic
these are trhe programs I can`t use
divx encoder
hd decrypter
dvd shrink
all of these says they work on vista but I had bad luck
could it be the home basic?

I haven`t used that many programs on it yet
it`s such a turn off using vista

I have Home Premium with Service Pack 1.

divx encoder
hd decrypter
dvd shrink

I've used the DIVX encoder (running right now, AAMOF) and DVD Shrink. Flash works great under Firefox as well.

My DivX Codec is 6.8.0.

I use Magic DVD Ripper to encode via DivX.

thanks
I see we`re of different worlds
see everythings I do is from freeware
dvd shrink is rip or convert to iso image
the rip I use divxencoder to make a avi for my pockert pc
decrypter on the iso for making back ups
I`ll have to see if that codec can help me out
thank you

What advantage is Vista over XP?

What advantage is Vista over XP?

It will be supported when the support for XP is turned off shortly.

I like the interface better.

The are downsides - it requires more computer resources being the main one.

Yeah, me too, in general. Unfortunately, all of the freeware DVD rippers suck. Magic is only $35, less than a tank of gas. ;-)

I don't rip that many movies. Anything that Magic can't handle on it's own, I've just used DVDecrypt to dump it onto the hard disk, then used Magic from there. DVDecrypt is freeware, and it strips any copy protection I've run into so far, but does not do any ripping (it just copies the DVD onto a hard disk sans copy protection).

Maybe I'll rent Casino Royale and see if it's any problem going that route.

For Magic, you can download it for free and run it for a while, see if it works for you before you buy it.

I do that with my laptop
I put in on my hard-drive and use vlc to play it like a dvd.
on trips I don`t have to carry disc that way.

Yeah, I rip to DivX encoded AVIs. Then I don't have to use 4+GBs of space, most movies compress down to under 1GB. If I use the screen settings for my N800 (which I use to watch DVDs and TV on trips, 'cause it fits in my pocket) I can get a movie down to 600MB, most TV shows under 300MB. With two 4GB cards in my N800, I can have the equivalent of 13-16 DVDs in my pocket, ready to watch. And a stack of SDHC cards with more movies is no bigger than a pack of gum.

I use a x50
but it`s 3 years old and starting to die
can the n800 do word & excel?
I need a pda that handle those and watch movies?
My movie for my x50 makes movie 200 to 300mb avi movies ,but the screen is 4"
I got no idea how many sd cards I have any more.
I bought a mess of them from woot.
can a n800 handle streaming?
youtube or tv websites?

The N800 is not a PDA, it's a Linux based tablet. Since it has no keyboard, word and excel would be a pain. There are utilities for viewing documents, but it's not really a general purpose computer. It does work with Google Docs, IIRC, so you could do docs and spreadsheets that way on it.

youtube or tv websites?

Yes. Web based stuff is the N800 target.

hmm
thanks
gonna have to give it some serious though
the website doesn`t give enough description for me to know
you saying it does streaming is a selling point for me
it wasn`t mentioned onsite.
I find technology today lacking in sales presentation
I think a good old fashion horse trader can clean up in this day and age.

I got a copy of Casino Royale, and it's ripping right now. If I have any problems with playback, I'll let you know. Otherwise, it was painless.

some of the sony movies are the toughest
so tough that thier own dvd players can`t run it.
so I think thier pulling back on the blocker`s till they get a better idea.
let me know if you get trouble
I find out the exact name of that hd decrypter for you to try
it`s pretty strong.

Seems to work without a hitch.
