BT ,
Seriously, why are so many "guests" visiting threads on this board. Who are they besides the SE's you speak of?
Are these folks not from around the world of internet listeners, viewers and drive by ghosts?
Explain why you say they are just from search engines.

Because their IP's trace back to search engines.

BT,
But, are they searching debategate specifically?
I don't understand. When I search something....it isn't usually someone's profile on the gate.
-
They crawl the whole site including profiles. The visitor viewing UPs profile is from Yahoo. A couple of guest are from Google and a few more from ripe.net in Amsterdam. do a google of Universe Prince and see if it comes back Debategate.

Search engines crawl the whole net constantly, creating indexes of the data they find. That is how search engines can pull results so quickly - they don't look at the net right now, they look at what it looked like when their engines crawled around last. It's an on-going process; they crawl around BT's website for a while, then create the indexes for this site and merge them in with the current indexes, then move on to another site. When you do a query on a search site, it only queries it's own indexes to generate results.

One of the blogs I visit has a section on the sidebar showing who the last few visitors are, where they are from, how they got there, and what they looked at. I usually show up as arriving via Google, since I usually use a link from my iGoogle homepage to get there. I've seen others show up from various other search portals to view specific items that have been posted, such as pics of various celebrities, articles on specific subjects, etc. That may show up as the reason they checked the site out, but there is nothing to show whether they were interested enough in the site to stick around and see what else it had to offer. Anyway, that's why we're probably getting hits from search engines - the keywords the people are using are directing them here.

Ok, now I have a new question.
Who are the "entities" that view the threads?
Some threads have 17, while other threads have 200-300, so then who is viewing the thread when it grows to be into the 1000's? Those threads are popular, I understand that, so who are those folks?

The statistics software I use for my website separates out the web crawlers from redirects via a search engine. You can see it here (generates stats on the fly):
http://mario.silent-tower.org/stats/ (http://mario.silent-tower.org/stats/)
It even tells you what search terms were used when someone found my site. The Marilyn Lange Shrine continues to be my big draw, and it's a site that I don't advertise or even have linked from anywhere. (If you visit the Marilyn Lange Shrine from the links on the stats page, there is nudity... be forewarned...)

I still need to understand why some threads have 17 viewers and other threads, that are clearly more interesting and worthy of attention.......have more "viewers".
-
Reload a thread , check the view count, then do the math.
The more responses, the more checking the thread, the more view counts. It's geometric.
-
What is ..(+1 hidden)...?
-
where do you see that?

Never seen it.
There is a setting in your profile that disallows showing your online status. Maybe that's it.
I am satisfied that the majority of guests are search engines. We will probably get some new registrations from folks from Yahoo PIC as the election draws near.

Yep. I like to drop in and out unannounced.
