Beinart came out of the trauma worst. He will forever be haunted by his own definition of the matter at stake, which was immediately judged from all sides to be an unforced production of Alt-Right propaganda: "The West is a racial and religious term. To be considered Western, a country must be largely Christian (preferably Protestant or Catholic) and largely white." Across social media, much nodding ensued, from constituencies whose approval he would surely least appreciate.
I don't think so, seems that acceptance of countries that are not White , not much Christian and not even located in the West has been pretty strong. I am thinking of Japan and S.Korea.
There are ideals and values that make more difference than melanin or diet.
That Christianity is widely practiced is less important than that Christianity is not forbidden.
That one be descended from European gene pools is important to precisely who? For Americans it is problematic . Only a few of us are not crossed with Native Americans , Asians, Africans or whatever. Requiring descent of Europe is not a practical demand , that one drop has already found its way everywhere.
I would say that Japan and S.Korea are firmly members of the club and what profit is there in expelling them? Hong Kong would be a good member of "the West" as well , if the government of China could stand the idea.
