<<How did Ontarioans defend two hundred acres from Indians?>>
The Indians got pretty big reserves. A lot of them came north with the British after the American Revolution and settled in an area about sixty miles west of my home. I don't think there was any fighting with them in Ontario but I really don't know for sure. That's a huge part of our history that is just missing from our educational system. Maybe kids today learn more about it, but I sure as hell didn't.
<<There is a little apple and orange problem , because of length of growing season and general fertility lots further south can produce more food per acre , if the diffrence is a magnitude of ten then the value for farming is even.>>
That's a good point. Maybe the Indians never wanted to farm anyway. I think they were mainly hunter-gatherers, although now they can't really live like that any more. That's why they're all fucked up on drugs and alcohol with the highest suicide rate in the country. But I've seen some government programs to turn their situation around and they're also engaged in self-help and cultural recovery initiatives as well. Long-term is good, their population in on the up-swing, but short-term is still not very good. Personally I think that self-help and cultural revival will help most. The whites tried for a long time to make them abandon their culture, with what I think were disastrous effects.
