the problem is it`s walmart meaning it`s electronicly micromanaged to the point it`s highly unlikely the scanner got the price wrong.it`s doubtful they could not correct the pricing once attentioned.

Wal*Mart does this in FL as well. Dollar General does not, Family Dollar does not. Publix does not.

If they collect 70 cents tax on a $5.00 purchase, they can keep the extra tax collected, because they do not report coupons as cash received.

hey!

remember those promo rebates?
we pay full price plus sales tax, mail the rebate form and a certain dollar amount comes back..does that mean that business pocket the sales tax difference?

Stores are required to report sale price prior to coupons and rebates and pay taxes on that amount. If they're "pocketing" the sales tax, they are violating the law.

Every state has a different law regarding sales tax and reporting it.

Actually, states have been consolidating their sales tax laws over the last 20 years or so, in an effort to make them consistant across state lines. This will allow the federal government to mandate collection of sales tax for online sales. But here is a good explanation of why it's (generally) collected: http://www.savingadvice.com/articles/2008/04/20/102106_2106.html
