I'm hesitant to speak for Lanya, so I'll speak for myself. Stinging satire can cohabit the realm of political discourse with genuine personal regard in an end-product that is as complicated and complex as the human mind itself. Indeed, robust discourse and commentary is so important to our system of government that it is emblazoned in the founding document itself. And as time moves on and patterns are established -- stubborn and invidious ones -- the tendency of commentators "to make nice" dissolves into a mandate for the politicians to explain themselves, honestly and openly, which, not forthcoming, virtually compels responsible commentators (and editorial cartoonists) to ratchet up the pressure, matching intransigence with evermore scathing "attacks."
