Ooooooops!
« on: March 17, 2011, 03:57:41 PM »
Ooooops!

I bought some Potassium Iodide tablets after Sept 11th.

So I dug them out this morning with all the nuke problems in Japan.

Great...they expired in 2007!

I guess they'd be better than nothing.....(AMI would they be better than nothing?)

Doubt we'll need them this time anyway.

be very careful c4

Thanks Kimba....I appreciate your concern, but I have no intention of casually
taking the Potassium Iodide....in fact I would only take it in an emergency.
Also I have none of the problems listed in the article that cause problems with taking it.

But again I would only take it in an emergency.

Like Kramer I was a Boy Scout and the Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared".

So as soon as I can after this crisis passes and the prices fall again I will replenish
my supply of Potassium Iodide and stack it next to my 6 month supply of freezed
dried food, my 1000 rounds of ammo, my radiation masks, my water purification tablets,
my short wave radio, my extra medical supplies, my cases of water and soup I rotate in and out,
my propane, my propane stove, my lanterns, my candles/ matches, my brand new fits perfect
snowmobile suit and hope I never have to use any of it, but I am sure many Japanese
wish they had right now that thought they'd never have the need for either.  ;)

LOL....good one Kimba!

I wish we had basements in Texas, I keep about 15 cases of water
in a spare bedroom bathtub....that way if it leaks it won't be a problem.
I rotate my water supply every few months.

I just wish my tub looked like this!  ;)

Potassium Iodide is a simple chemical compound. It should not decay or decompose. In 1000 years it will still be KI.
How could it possibly expire?

Organic compounds like proteins can expire, but not a simple chemical.

Thanks XO.
As you can see there is an expiration date on the pkge in the bottom left of the picture I posted.
You think it is bogus?....Maybe a sales gimic?

The only thing that could happen to a simple chemical is that it could absorb water from the atmosphere, or perhaps inert ingredients, such as cornstarch, used to bind the tablet together might change, or interact with the KI in the tablet. I deem this to be unlikely if they are sealed.

The manufacturer may have to post an expiration date on all medicine to be in compliance with some regulation. Obviously, the factory would prefer that people throw away old merchandise and replace it, in order for the manufacturer to sell more stuff.

If the tablet is 100% KI and is sealed, I don't see how there could be a true expiration date.

If you buy a jug of distilled water, it will have a date, but this is because of the water reacting slightly with the container. Even glass is very minutely soluble in water. But after a thousand years, the contents of a sealed jug of water will still be 99.99% H2O and still more healthy to drink than water in a fresh mud puddle.

Organic compounds like proteins can expire, but not a simple chemical.

4 KI + 2 CO2 + O2 → 2 K2CO3 + 2 I2

Exposure to air. And there is no way to completely eliminate exposure to air in any commercially viable packaging.

That makes a lot of sense. Must be why XO didn't think about the obvious. Kinda like when you buy almost anything that goes into the mouth and down the throat. There is always an expiration date. Will XO try and defend his dumbness or just ignore your answer?

I guess someone is responsible for examination of Susi so that kelp harvested from the contaminated zone is not served with a lot of radioactive isotope of Iodine.

Dems will need to pass a law that all Sushi places have Geiger counters.

AMI...speaking in general terms.....if thats all you had and there
was an emergency do you think it would still be of some value almost
4 years after the expiration date printed on the package?
