It would surely be of some value. Perhaps 95% or more effective.
KCO3 is not deadly, and elemental Iodine in the small amounts that might occur should do no serious harm. If there was a change to any appreciable amount of elemental Iodine, they would change in color. KI is white. If it had oxidized, it would be yellowish. So if it is still white, it has not oxidized enough to make is dangerous.

I am sure that there would be far more reaction to these pills in your stomach in ten minutes than there could possibly be in a sealed bottle or bubble wrap for four years.

It would take a long time for the radiation to reach deepwater fish. Sushi served in the US would most likely have been taken from nearby waters.

AMI...speaking in general terms.....if thats all you had and there
was an emergency do you think it would still be of some value almost
4 years after the expiration date printed on the package?

Take 30% more and that will cover the degradation. Just a guess.

I think all directions effect whether you get there early, late, or on time. So the answer would be -- it depends.

If the pills are white, then there has been little degradation of the KI. If they are yellowish or brownish, the darker there are, the more KI has been changed to elemental iodine, which is definitely not good for you.

So just look at the pills. Packaging cannot prevent ALL contact with the atmosphere, but it surely can prevent most of it. You have not said whether these are in bottles (plastic or glass) or in plastic wrap.

for gods sake, he should just buy some new ones. you aren't a chemist, doctor, or even an expert on the subject. Go teach someone some Spanish!

He can clearly buy some new pills for his paranoia, that is bloody obvious. I have heard that most stores are sold out of these, though. They might not be available.

I hardly think it would make any difference whether he took them or not. It is a very large planet and Japan is very far away.

YOU are the one who told him to take 30% more. That is hardly good advice if they have a high elemental Iodine content.

Thanks XO....the picture I posted shows they are in a paper
package and each pill is like a foil sealed individual unit. (not in a bottle)

Kramer I plan on buying a new supply once the Japan hype settles down.
Right now most retailers are sold out or they are sky-high prices because of
the Japan panic. I am not in a panic and really not that concerned but
was just curious as to what people thought.

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts.

Prepare a saturated solution (add the tablets to water until no more tablets will dissolve). The resulting solution will contain about 50mg per drop. Figure out the dose you want in mg, divide that by 50 and ingest that many drops.

Elemental iodine will sublimate and leave the solution.

I guess some trace amounts of radiation hit Southern Cal today so yesterday I took a product called Iogen. They are Iodine 3036 mcg (as potassium iodide 84% and potassium iodate 16% ) and Selenium 1.3 mcg. Says adults take 3 tablets for 5 days then decrease to 1 tablet every 3 days for one month.

I thought there was a upper atmosphere wind that normally goes one direction it makes plane travel faster east to west or vis-a- versa

meaning if it was east to west than our exposure would be very minimul to radition

Elemental iodine will sublimate and leave the solution.

===========================================
Sublimate means it will turn from a solid to a gas, without becoming a liquid first, doesn't it?

I can see where it might sink to the bottom and not dissolve, but could solid Iodine turn to a gas at room temperature?

As I recall elemental Iodine will dissolve in water in very small amounts.

I used to play with halogens (except for Fluorine, and I suppose Atstatine, which is radioactive and very hard to find). I gassed mice living in the cold airshafts of our home with Bromine. It killed them all, smelled weird for a day and after the deceased mice began to decay, the smell got worse.

Finally, we set up a line through the shafts by rolling a roller skate with a line on it between shafts, and then used a sandbag to rake in the deceased rodents. There were about 30 of them.  The house has not had mice since then, so far as I know.

it still has a big fat rat living there though, his name is Richard.

Elemental iodine does not dissolve well into water at all (organic solvents are usually used) but sublimates into gaseous form instead. At standard temperatures (room temperature) elemental iodine is either a bluish black solid or a violet-pink gas, with occasional appearance as a liquid. One of the curious properties of the family of halogens (which iodine is a member) is that they all inhabit all three common phases of matter at standard temperature and pressure (solid, liquid, and gas).
