The thing is that evolution has not designed humans for the lives that most of us lead. Small children like sweets for a reason.I do not recall that ANYTHING ever tasted too sweet to me when I was a kid. I could not stand tomatoes, radishes, pepper or okra. Now Pepsi tastes far to sweet for me to enjoy it,and I love all those vegetables and pepper.
Ronald McDonald appeals to the smallest of kids: under eight, anyway. The fact is that fresh vegetables are relatively expensive when compared by price to McD's burgers with regard to the feeling of satiety. McD's capitalizes on that, and of course, going to a restaurant is an experience for a kid. Going to the supermarket and having Mom fix anything is not.
The toys are a sort of bribe. It is rather unethical to have Ronald around anymore, but he is profitable.
After a number of lawsuits by BK franchise holders against BK for advertising the Whopper Junior, it is dead. It was replaced by the Buck Double, which was identical to the Whopper Junior except for the sliver of tomato, and now the Buck double is $1.29, it has shriunk, and is now called the "Stacker", the "single stacker" has one meat patty, the Whopper Junior has two. The "double stacker is $2.29. Stackers have a piece of bacon, which the previous burgers lacked.
So Checker's is now the better value in my neighborhood. McD's expensive burgers are not bad, but their cheap ones are pretty awful.
It is a little known fact that McDonald's coffee at $1.00 is not only pretty good, it is identical and only 69ยข if ordered as "senior coffee", and the checkout person does not ask for ID.
