Throughout our species' existence, groups of humans have generally become more prosperous as they become more populous. In just the last 50 years, the Earth's population has doubled, and the effect has been that the per-capita income of the human race has tripled, even when adjusted for inflation. Average lifespan is up 30 percent, child mortality is down by two thirds and food production is up by a third.
